Read a post asking cons to add a "cosplay lounge" this is why I'm against it.
We don't need a cosplay recovery lounge.
What we need is respect in this community again.
I'm going to age myself here, but when I first started cosplaying, if I need to "hike my panyhose up" or "pull out a spandex wedgie" cosplayers DID understand and wouldn't bother me while I adjusted my costume. We RESPECTED one another enough to not take a photo during that time.
Every time I wear a costume of any type, I carry my own emergency supplies. It's better because then I know that that shade of thread will match because it's the thread I used to make the costume. I know the paint will match the chipped spot because it's the same paint I used to make the item. I didn't expect someone else to fix what I'm wearing because I'm the one wearing it. I RESPECT myself enough to fix myself.
If I need a place to sit and rest because I'm worn out, I'll go up to my hotel room (or a friend's hotel room or step outside to a quiet spot I scouted). I don't expect the con to have a spot for me because I'd rather the con worry about the con. Not me. I RESPECT the cons I'm going to and don't want to waste their resources for my personal break.
"But. Rabbit, you're trying to spread the color communication cards. Why isn't this the same?"
Because the cards are a way to teach RESPECT for one another. You're trusting that people will look at the cards and understand now is not the time to talk to you. These cards are a way to teach a community that is forgetting how important respect for one another is.
The lounge is another way to stop teaching respect. And if this a community that stops respecting one another to not take photos while adjusting costumes, to carry our own emergency supplies for our own costumes, and respecting our peace when we need a moment to rest, then what kind of community am I in?
I already know that I'm a rare breed and I know I'm going to get a lot of grief for this, but when a 12 year old girl calls you a Bitch because you stopped her from giving you a hug when she didn't ask for your permission in the first place, it really causes you to think "since when did we stop respecting one another?"
I'd rather teach the next generation how to respect one another by example than hide behind this idea that we can't respect one another and we have to have special rooms for things that are common courtesy.
Not to mention, if I have a wedgie, I sure as hell will not wait to walk into a room where I can feel safe to pick it. I will pick it while my back is pressed against a wall because damn are they uncomfortable!
