Okay, I will probably dragged for this, but fuck this. I think I need to speak about it.
Latin american people have a different relation to racism and race of american people.
People you consider non-white may be white to us
People we consider non-white may be white.
The concept of race is a social construct, not a biological one, it is a direct result of racism. It is construct on culture and social norms.
That being said. A lot of americans believe all latin people to not be white, and I understand that comes from the long history of exclusion, bigotry, persecution and general violence latine people had to deal with in the USA, Canada and Europe.
However, in a fandom that is vastly composed of latin fans that were born and raised in Latin America, we do not have the same definition of whiteness as you. The same creators you perceive as being POC might be consider white to us.
Weird statement that I see a lot on american discourse: "painting latinamerican people with white skin means you are whitewashing them". I do understand that in many countries latin people are not white, but this is kinda of statement is counterproductive. There is plenty of latin dark skin people but there is also a lot of extremely white people, reducing latin people to this imagine of semi tan skin is unhelpful.
I will try not to go so deep in how americans, canadians and europeans view the artistic represetention of latin american, but it truly bothers me.
However, my biggest point of this is not gringos discussing how other gringos should represent us. It is how now some of you all are expecting us to comply with your definitions of what makes a person white or non-white. Complaing to latin american artist that they are whitewashing a person that to them IS white, it is truthfully the most stupid thing ever.
You are not a activists for doing that.
If you actually want to help POC, maybe a first step is understanding that whiteness is an idea, more than anything else.
The idea of whiteness is cultural concept, it is not a universal thing.
