It’s a habit Petra’s held onto over the years. When her mother died when she was only ten, her father, still grief-sickened himself, had done his best to try to help her cope. He told her whenever she felt alone to pray to her mother, looking down from heaven. That way she could talk to her like she was still alive and with them.

Despite not being very religious, Petra continued that habit through her training. When trying to decide whether to join the Military Police or the Survey Corps, she poured her heart out to her mother. Before her first mission she spilled out all the fears she had. After she met a man she wouldn’t mind spending the rest of her life with, she asked her mother for advice with that little nervous laugh of her.

The thought of him makes her chest tighten with that all too familiar sadness. She’s used to loss, but that didn’t stop the hurt from cutting into her heart like a knife.

Come on, Petra. Let’s just get this over with. Maybe it will help.

So she kneels in her too empty bedroom and tries to imagine Levi with her mother up in heaven. Knowing him, he’d argue if such a place existed, he’d end in hell. This thought makes her smile, so she tries to concentrate on it instead of the sight of his corpse, bloody and twisted.

“Hey L?” Her voice is shaky and she hates it, but she has to push forward. “I’m really scared. Things aren’t just about Titans anymore and these children are looking up at me for leadership. I’ve never been a leader like you have, and don’t argue you weren’t, we both know the squad adored you. I adored you,” She has to choke out those last few words. “Anyway, I miss you so much. There really hasn’t been time to grieve. And I’m trying to stay strong, but it’s just so hard,” Petra has to wipe a tear away. “I wish you could give me some advice. I wish you were here with me, and that things could be like they used to be. There’s so many things I wish for, it would take years to rattle them off-” She’s interrupted by a knock on her door. With that Petra bolts up and tries to straighten herself up. She can’t show weakness, not now.

She opens the door and finds Eren standing there, shifting around awkwardly. “Captain Ral?” The title never fails to come out clunky from his mouth. He still remembers days where they were comrades and gossiped when they should have cleaned. “Historia says she’s come to a decision and will play her part as princess.”

“Oh that’s wonderful!” Petra tries to fake excitement. “Give me one second, I have one thing to take care of.” Excellent, work always takes her mind off of things, busy bees don’t have time to remember dead friends. However she makes sure to put on the necklace with Levi’s ring attached to it. (She doesn’t try to imagine what the ring was for.) She tucks it under her blouse like she always does, still it makes her feel more confidant.

Please Levi, lend me all the strength you can.

A crash came from the kitchen and I walked down to investigate. Instead of a burglar, or the Jaeger kids (again), it was you, muttering angrily as you stumbled around the kitchen.

“Can’t sleep?” I asked, leaning against the door frame.

“Nope,” you replied tersely. “Sorry for waking you.”

“Captain?”

“Hmm?”

“Permission to speak freely, sir?”

A sigh. “Permission granted, Petra.” He blinks at her; an errant strand of her hair is poking him in the eye and he can’t exactly get a good view of her face from down here, but he hopes she can at least hear the disdain. “Although I don’t understand the point of asking so formally, given our current conditions.”

She has the good grace not to laugh as she shifts a little where she lies, inching herself down his body so she can fold her arms against his chest, pillow her chin on them to get a good look at his face. “I wanted to ask you a question.”

“So ask,” he says. He still sounds faintly irritated, but his fingers have come up seemingly of their own accord, drawing light, lazy circles into her back. She didn’t think he’d be the type with wandering hands, but this feels as precise and deliberate as the unusual backward stroke of his blade, and she hums a little, arching into the touch.

“Have you ever kissed anyone before?”

His hand drops. She almost regrets it, but the way he’s turned his face away from her so his expression is obscured half by his hair and half by the blankets, now in an uncharacteristic state of disarray, is too precious for words.

“You,” he finally answers. “Many times in the last fifteen or twenty minutes. I’m sorry I can’t give you a more exact figure, but you have to understand I was kind of occupied.”

“I’m sure.” She is fiddling now with the buttons of his shirt–or what remain of them, anyway. The upper two have rolled beneath the bed; unfortunate casualties, but nothing her A-grade needlework won’t fix, later. “Before that?”

“Does it matter?”

“Not really,” she admits, burying her nose in the crook of his neck in order to avoid embarrassing him with her smile. She can’t tell whether he’s craning his head upward in encouragement, or to further hide his face, but she’ll take it. “I just wanted to know.”

“Well, now you do.” His hands are wandering again–no, exploring. Deliberately. Making an expedition, if you will, though he is infinitely more careful with the buttons of her shirt than she was with his just a minute ago. “… How can you tell?”

“Mm. The first time, you did go stiff as a corpse.” Her lips are at his jawline, feather-light, ghosting. His skin is strangely warm for someone with such an icy disposition.

“The human mouth is full of germs, Petra.”

“I brushed my teeth less than an hour ago, I’ll have you know. And the second one, too much tongue.”

“Your tongue, definitely.” His arm wraps around her waist, pulls her back up so their foreheads press together. There is an unmistakable flush across his face and neck–possibly embarrassment, possibly something else entirely. “I felt it in the back of my throat. And the third time?”

“You bit me the third time.”

“Well, sorry,” he mumbles, right up against her lips. He can’t pull her any closer than he already has, but any iota of space between them at this point is too far. “You must think I’m a terrible disappointment.”

“That’s okay, captain.” There’s her smile again; he can feel it on his skin, and while he dearly loves to talk to her, loves it even more when she smiles, there are many more enjoyable things he can now imagine her doing with that mouth. “We have lots of time to practice.”

Monster, it was good for my skill level back then but I could do so much better nowadays’s (not to mention I’m slightly embarrassed by it and it still get attention on Fanfiction.net)
