IWTVL S3 Ep6 Musings - ghost!Claudia & Merrick
My strongest emotion this episode: The thing I EFFING HATE most about this is season is how GabriellA takes up TOO. MUCH. SPACE.
THAT'S IT?! 😡💢 That's all either of you have to say?! Y'all just aren't gonna talk about Claudia cussing y'all out AT ALL?!
WHO CAAAARES!? 🙄 AMC had the nerve to have Loustat sit on that park bench & INSTANTLY start talking about EFFING GABRIELLA again, like OMFG!?And STILL not even properly explain HER, either?! Loustat just goes: Welp! that was that! Claudia's miserable alone in Hell & she hates us--so, how about that incest~?! 🤦♂️
The seance should've been its own episode; the same way the Trial was--that y'all STILL haven't discussed yet WTF?!
Y'all aren't gonna let Lestat explain his BIGGEST sin against Claudia?!
Why is she bringing up Antoinette & Tom Anderson in the Trial? (Tom Anderson wasn't even mentioned during the Trial--the projection was WRONG because it OMITTED Tom; and just showed Lestat with a bottle of poison, no Tom Anderson at all. 🤨) What else did Lestat make up in the script? (I mean, yeah, he lied on her A LOT, about her having a defect & not mentioning Charlie & burning herself just for attention & etc etc; but what else is she getting at here? 🤔)
Merrick!Claudia opened talking to Louis, but she KEPT looking directly at Lestat; cuz that's how she DIED, staring HIM down:
And like Delainey said, Claudia died not knowing for sure if Lestat loved her at all. She KNEW Louis loved her, but Lestat was a giant question mark. So IMO this CAN'T be the end of the Claudia chapter, because we STILL have no answer for WTF Lestat was actually up to in Paris, before, after--or heck, DURING--the Trail. WHY didn't he warn Louis & Claudia (or even Madeleine)? WHY didn't he torch the Theatre during those rehearsals? Is ghost!Claudia right, that he let them get kidnapped & tortured & lynched ON PURPOSE, for revenge? Or is she wildin TF out for all the wrong reasons?
Loustat said Claudia spared them the ambiguity, but I wholeheartedly disagree--there's ambiguity up & down the whole seance, cuz it seems to me like ghost!Claudia literally doesn't know WTF she's talking about. And I feel it in my bones that AMC's gonna reveal that Lestat was forced to be in that Trial against his will, now more than ever; specifically because he's REFUSED to say ish about it this whole time, all season, even when Louis accused him in 3x2 and now Claudia's accusing him in 3x6. 💀 So either Lestat did all that ish in the Trial on purpose, OR there's no objective truth here and ghost!Claudia's WRONG. Which one is it? 🤔
This deeply bothers me, cuz I don't think Lestat's "hallucinations" were him just going crazy--there's clearly some level of clairvoyance going on with "my first soul...the oracle" Baby Jenks, plus Magnus predicting "the Drummer" TC being turned, plus bb!Lestat predicting that Louis would call. SOMETHING special is going on with these visions, cuz they KNOW things. But CLAUDIA doesn't know A LOT. 👀 I think her ghost's just lashing out cuz she's assuming the worst about her p.o.s. fathers, BECAUSE they chose each other over her again--or so she thinks. 👀
Cuz she IMMEDIATELY opened with this:
It instantly reminded me of this fanart I recently reblogged, cuz I had a gut feeling it was gonna be relevant:
Cuz Louis's always been a Pick Me to Claudia, constantly pickling some trifling man over her; and she told him so to his face in 2x1 AND 2x4 AND 2x7.
So I KNEW seeing Loustat "together" again was gonna piss her off. And again: she's making assumptions, cuz they're NOT even together! (But they WANT to be, ofc--trailer parks in Utah, bleh.)
As for the lashings themselves; the way people were talking; I actually expected FAR worse. 😅
I thought AMC was gonna stick to the books and STAB Louis; tryna kill him for good the way book!Claudia's poltergeist did. Instead she just smacked him upside the head--or rather, the glass of alcohol did.
Cuz like I suspected, there was nothing in ghost!Claudia's truthbombs that we hadn't already heard in some shape or form from Claudia in S2 already.
In Season 1? This isn't true; her diaries during The Easy Times explicitly said what she thought about Louis & Lestat--BEFORE everything went to Hell post-Charlie.
But in Season 2? ABSOLUTELY. Delainey already explained the complexities of this during S2. Esp. since Claudia's exasperation was loud & clear, which Daniel called out himself in 1x7, that she hated Louis' guts by the time they got to Europe.
"Slave" & the Train Scene
Her repeatedly calling Louis a slave GAVE ME LIFE--that's precisely what she repeatedly said about him and "Massa" Lestat in S1; and THEE most consistent thing that came out of her mouth.
All the hype over the Train Scene, only for it to not be revisited at all to prove that NONE of it "NEVER" happened; and for her to literally confirm what I BEEN said:
Threatening to "do WORSE than rape" is NOT the same as threatening TO rape; or threatening her WITH rape! 🤦♂️ This does NOT prove that NOTHING from that Train Scene never happened. It just confirms that Louis wasn't there, and HE never lied on Lestat at all ("cancerous jackal" WHOMST?). Claudia HATED Lestat, and SOMETHING went down after the Bench Scene; that made up her mind to get Louis to join her Murder Plot to KILL Lestat. 🤷♂️ Her liking Lestat more or less is immaterial to the FACT that there is no "proof" of LesDaughter bullcrap that she never wanted Lestat dead or "she hated him for no reason" in Rue Royale. No, she hated Lestat for VERY valid reasons CUZ SHE THOUGHT HE WAS AN ABUSER AND LOUIS WAS HIS SLAAAAAAVE; so she used underhanded tactics to beat him--BRAVO, I say! 👏😤 KILL HIM AGAIN!
Which is precisely why the "nappy" line makes no sense. I might have to make a separate post about it, cuz it's mighty hypocritical of her to call Louis' head nappy, considering the GODAWFUL straightened weaves & wigs AMC had S2 Claudia in with those Caucasian AF Victory Rolls--in direct contrast with what Bailey said about S1 Claudia REFUSING to conform to white beauty standards by straightening her hair with product; and in contrast to everything said I myself about Louis who DID conform to white beauty standards and processed his hair all the way up until the 1970s (during the Black Power Movement when Black people finally started embracing their natural hair and being proud of their afros). S2 Claudia was conforming to white standards the whole time she was in Paris; hence: THE COVEN. She felt ashamed of her Blackness in Paris her daggone self, so coming at Louis tryna check him on his coonery rings hollow when she straightened her hair too. Clearly the writers didn't think this line through, OR it's just another testament to ghost!Claudia not knowing WTF she's talking about cuz she's not legit at all. 🤔
She also contradicted herself when she said she didn't kill Louis cuz she doesn't want him stuck with her. That actually makes no sense. Cuz she's all alone in Hell--no Madeleine, no nothing (she almost made me CRY, you better ACT, Delainey! 😭👌). So if damned souls are alone in limbo/oblivion, then it doesn't matter if she kills Louis or not.
ghost!Claudia's Hell is literal Vampire Loneliness: vampires have NO ONE when they die. They're DAMNED: ALONE & forsaken in the pit. All they have is companionship ON EARTH. There's NOTHING beyond it. So Claudia wouldn't be with Madeleine or Louis or Lestat or anyone when she died--that's the whole point. 🤷♂️
So I'm unconvinced that that's the real reason she didn't let Louis die--but I ALSO believe that she never called Louis' name in the first place. I DO think he was tweaking TF out cuz of his PTSD & "crippling guilt."
I think these lines are gonna be MIGHTY relevant when Akasha starts really talking-talking ("It's not the blood, it's what you do with it!"); Loustat both constantly using a woman as an excuse for their BS--Louis with Claudia, and Lestat with Gabs/Akasha/Antoinette/etc.
TL;DR: I'm unconvinced, fam 🤷♂️
I seriously suspect that ghost!Claudia is yet another manifestation of their shared guilt ("dress on the wall, song on the radio")--just like Louis explained about DreamStat at the very start of the episode.
And I think Lestat was right, that the wind blowing and items smashing was misleading--esp. since the dress kept returning right back where it was every time she disappeared--in or OUT of the circle.
So it's not that I DON'T think there wasn't something preternatural afoot with ghost!Claudia--but I doubt it's as simple as accepting ANY of the hallucinations/ghosts at face value--even book!Merrick warned against fully trusting ghost!Claudia. 😬 So I'm still waiting on AMC to give us the deets on the Trial, before I make up my mind about whether ghost!Claudia was real; let alone if Merrick (of all people--read the book, cuz she's evil--but granted, that could've just been Anne Rice being racist AF making the voodoo practitioner a giant con artist jezebel) is legit or not. 🤷♂️
All in all, I'm not disappointed or upset by the seance at all--esp. since I expected way worse. And Delainey already said what I already know to be true: ghost!Claudia is NOT the full breadth & depth of the REAL Claudia's feelings for EITHER of her fathers.
She's an ugly mirror held up to Loustat's faces, and they needed to hear that ish, truth or not. Whether she understands the full depth & breath of THEIR love for HER or not--or what REALLY went down at Rue Royale, Paris, the Trial, etc. At the end of the day, she's angry cuz she's HURT. Facts are irrelevant, FEELS are everything. Cuz she felt like neither one of them loved her enough--and they didn't. 😔 So I can't even get mad at anything she said, not really.
I'm more concerned about the overall writing/organization of the episode itself, cuz it was messy AF; with A LOT of dangling threads that worry me if AMC actually thinks they're in any way "done" with Claudia now. 😬
I think AMC rushed getting the Claudia situation squared away, so that Loustat could move on to The Plot™ of whatever TF DM is up to, without the loose thread of their dead daughter still not being addressed as we the audience get swept up in the consequences of the Great Conversion & Akasha's awakening. The pacing was terrible.
Like I said, the seance should've been its own episode, a la 2x7. The Daniel Dinner, Brutal Love, the Lioncest Reveal, all of that should've been its own ep AFTER 3x6, to give Claudia's fallout time to breathe and be absorbed & processed by Loustat, before they'll inevitably be distracted/preoccupied by their effing decapitation.
(I'm also BIG mad that we were robbed of Lestat & Cortland Mayfair meeting, omfg I KNOW those two queens would've been hilarious.)
