obv am not a reviewer and have not seen any of the eps yet so my thoughts may change - albeit given the source material the creators are working with and under whose creative direction i doubt that.. - but i had been wanting for a while to put into words some of the issues i have with lanterns aging up hal specifically so here they are 🤪

#hal jordan #john stewart #dc #lanterns tv #was debating whether or not i actually wanted to risk tagging this but like what the hell why not #but in any case. i feel like hal’s existence as a foot soldier is so crucial to understanding why his microaggressions against john are bad #he’s not speaking from a place of authority. he’s speaking from a place of stupidity because he’s been led to believe the world operates #per a rules based order and that that order is correct and worth maintaining #john directly challenges that worldview #and i mean again! again. i have not seen the show obv so i could be wrong #but the vibe i am getting from the show is that.. this is not what they are doing #and that they’re making it into more of a like. old guard versus young guard thing #and hal having to learn to let go or whatever. and it’s like. that is not inherently a bad message to convey #but in context of green lantern specifically it just feels like. lame. for lack of a better word #the military industrial complex allegory is just so much more compelling on every level

John Stewart's dad being abusive Vis-à-vis using him in target-practice-as-bravery-test certainly correlates with who he idolizes as a hero in Lanterns. I doubt the writing is going to be that self-aware, though.
