I want to make it incredibly clear that if you are Asian American you need to support the Black Lives Matter movement.
I talked about this with my mom this morning and you remember when a couple months ago a Chinese American cop killed an unarmed black man?

This is specifically talking about Chinese Americans but Asian Americans aren’t very politically active as a whole. However when this happened? There were petitions, organizations contacting lawyer, and protests all over the US. The main argument that I heard from the Asian American community? They said that it was because of racism that Peter Liang was convicted of manslaughter while white cops walked away with no prison time, with their jobs and lives intact after killing innocent black people. They said that if the system will convict Asian Americans when they didn’t try to kill anyone on purpose, the system should hold white people accountable too.
I don’t have evidence for this but my mom said that during this they were consider using the All Lives Matter hashtag to say that black people weren’t the only people being discriminated against. They only put down the idea down when someone pointed out it was a tag that white people used to be racist.
That’s disgusting. We should not be taking in these horrific acts of violence and then using them to turn around and say that hey we’re victims of racism too. Anti-black racism is what this country was founded on. It has been here since the beginning and is built into the system. Yes we face racism but anti-black racism needs to be addressed NOW.
Here’s a good article on Peter Liang’s case http://www.huffingtonpost.com/annie-tan/peter-liang-was-justly-convicted_b_9299860.html
Peter Liang was rightfully convicted and yes white cops that kill innocent black men should be held accountable but we need to think about how disgusting it is that it was only then that we started talking. Majority of us stayed silent as black people died. Most of us are still silent. We only spoke up when we thought we were victims. That’s not ok.
“We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented” – Elie Wiesel
This is a good article on why taking a neutral stance supports the oppressor.

I’m sure you’ve all heard this before as a kid. If you see someone bullying someone, tell an adult. Being a bystander means you are just as much at fault as the bully is. This is the same, just on a larger scale.
Here are a couple posts with more about Asian Americans in relation to the anti-black racism and the Black Lives Matter movement.

not specific to Asian Americans but it’s a good post
We need to support the Black Lives Matter movement and call out racism in our own communities. Silence isn’t acceptable. It never should be.
