Black (Wo)(Man) In A White World: The Racialization of Gender

Wrote my first (small) theory piece in a while. In this I'd like to ask nonwhite trans readers "What does gendered racialization look like in your community?"

I want to stress that this is not fodder for “socialization” theory. Do not skim this and start linking it as “proof” that male/female socialization exists, it does not.

I’m not here to talk about the socialization of gender, the concept that society successfully trains individuals in ways according to their Assigned Gender At Birth (AGAB) that becomes inherent regardless of their actual gender. I’m here to talk about the racialization of gender, the way it is externally forced upon racialized people while also de/ungendering us in a white supremacist, patriarchal society. I will be speaking from the experiences of a Black trans woman, but other nonwhite racialized folks have their own distinct experiences as well, as do all flavors of transness, not just transfemmes. Are you suggesting Palestinians aren't a race?

I'm not suggesting it, I'm stating it clearly as indesputable fact.

Palestinians are an ethnonational group under the ethnic umbrella of "Arabs."

Again: Words mean things. Specific things.

Ethnicity is based on shared culture, language, heritage, religion, and geographic ancestry. Palestinians are an ethnic group bound by a shared history, culture, and national identity...making them an ethnonational group.

Race is traditionally a classification based on physical traits (phenotype) like skin color or hair texture. However, modern science agrees that race has no biological basis; it is a category societies create to group people.

It's been bizarre watching supposedly well-educated and "anti-racist" far left white folks racialize Palestinians.

In order to try to wrap their brains around a topic where thay have no knowledge and lots of emotional resonance, they superimpose the falsely oversimplified domestic dynamic they mistakenly think they understand and superimpose it on peoples they don't understand in a place they've never been stteped in cultures they've never studied.

The reason Western leftists keep insisting Palestinians are a race has less to do with Middle Eastern reality and more to do with Western optics.

​By framing Palestinians as a "race," they try to drag a complex, century-old ethnonational conflict into the familiar American binary of color politics. If they can categorize this as a simple issue of racial phenotype, they don't have to do the hard work of understanding borders, history, religion, or specific cultural heritage...they can just superimpose their own domestic map onto a territory they know nothing about.

Think you can reliably tell Israelis from Palestinians on sight? Think again.

​If one actually cares about the people involved, one owes them the respect of seeing them as they define themselves, not as stand-in characters in one's own political play.

Recognizing that difference is the first step toward actual understanding.

Once you learn to recognize the rhetoric of eugenics and racialization for what it is, you look at modern fantasy and sci-fi and realize Oh That Accursed Shit Is Everywhere.

Sorry to use your inbox as a microphone but I really really want to push back on the common transfem and general MRA talking point that women don’t understand what it’s like to be framed as sexually aggressive or dangerous. As usual, this is demonstrative of their misogyny.

All kinds of women including but not limited to women of racial and ethnic minorities and lesbian or gender nonconforming women frequently are targeted with rhetoric that frames them as sexually dangerous.

Historically, witch panics have frequently involved accusations of sexual deviance. Many women were targeted in the satanic panic in both America and Britain and some of these accusations continue to this day.

Just in my own life, I have had Black and Latino female friends who have been demonized as sexually provocative as literal children. My gentile grandmother publicly revealed sexual details about my Jewish aunt (her former daughter in laws sister) because of her belief that Jewish women are dirty.

The idea that men are the only targets of “false accusations” or sexual demonization isn’t true

i really want to do some reading and then long-form writing untangling the rhetoric behind this idea of sexual demonization for myself and generally; in contexts of genuine marginalization it is hard to balance awareness of damaging myths like what you cite and reference vs instinctive protectionism, so i'd like to work out some kind of secure systematic approach that undercuts their disingenuous rhetoric w/o ignoring the actual factual applications of sexual demonization as a tool of social control... it's a complicated topic but they shouldn't get to use that complexity to hijack the conversation and silence the vulnerable

yes, full stop

only when the character has dark hair and eyes with pale skin

only when the characters are drawn in a more realistic fashion

only if their costume details look traditionally japanese

some combination of the above three options

no, i think of them as raceless or existing outside the context of ethnicity

"developing a community means tolerating people and not ostracizing people for being annoying sometimes" and "ignoring someone is social ostracization" are two statements that can and must coexist.
