My new favourite historical romance of 2019 is BRINGING DOWN THE DUKE by @evietheauthor, out now from @berkleyromance @penguinrandomca. The story is familiar - a commoner catches the eye of a Duke, and they can’t resist their own chemistry - but the writing is fresh, bold and full of strong research. Set against the political landscape of England in 1879, we get Annabelle, one of the first women at Oxford University, poor but determined, and a suffragist, clashing with Sebastian, Duke of Montgomery, one of the queen’s political strategists who needs to champion the Conservative party in the next election in order to win back his ancestral castle. All the #prideandprejudice feels are there, but it’s a Berkley book so you know you’re going to get some steaminess with the very intellectual foreplay. I love, love, loved this one - it’s an incredible debut, and if you’re a literary nerd, there’s a lot for you to delight in. There were moments I was near tears because I so desperately wanted Annabelle and Sebastian together, but didn’t know how it was going to happen.
