7 : Explain your stance on sex work.

I’m not a libfem, but I do value personal liberty and will support people’s choices in what to do with their own bodies to a pretty far extent. To me, that includes sex work. The issue is that people who argue from a point of libertarianism are rarely actually defending women’s choices to do what they want with their own bodies, they’re defending men’s choices to do what they want with women’s bodies.

I have the basic radfem opinions that free choice is a complicated concept and fairly useless in a society where women’s choices are so heavily influenced. That’s never going to override my stance on women’s personal freedom (largely because it’s a very slippery slope to start legislating what women are allowed to do with their own bodies) but I’m also not going to take the choice to do sex work at face value. I believe far fewer women would make this choice if we lived in a freer (genuinely free) society.

When it comes to the “consumer” side of sex work, it’s just straight up unethical. True consent cannot be bought, so you’re not buying sex ; you’re buying rape. Countless of women and children are trafficked to fill a demand that consumers are entirely responsible for. Nobody needs sex and I have no empathy for the people who feel that they need sex workers because they couldn’t get laid otherwise, nor for the argument that sex work reduces rape (because designating a class of women to suffer through it totally solves that issue).

As far as legislation goes I support the Nordic model, which criminalises the “consumption” of sex work but does not make it a crime to be a sex worker. It maintains women’s bodily autonomy and has been shown to reduce trafficking, so it’s the closest thing to a solution I can think of.

Also I strongly dislike the term “sex work” since I’m inherently opposed to the idea that having sex is just another job, and it’s been used by pimps to frame it that way and to get away from the more stigmatised term of prostitution. I generally use it because it encompasses more than just prostitution (stripping for example) and I used it in the original post because I was trying to phrase things as neutrally as possible. Not a fan though.
