Taffel Raffel Sourcream & Onion (Åland, Finland)
Out of production since 2015. RIP king.
Every single person in my sphere who remembers eating these a decade ago misses them dearly. I barely bought any other chips at the time. Regular salted Raffel is still around, but the retired scream variant has not been seen since before the downfall of civil society.
The Raffel snacks are peak shape design. A loose fusilli twist with just enough softness that you can choose whether to bite down on it or let it melt in your mouth. The curves collect flavor and the potato mass they're made out of has a pleasant, mild flavor that doesn't override what's on top.
Raffel screams were softly flavorful. Not much salt, but instead very creamy with mild onion added to it. It was quite easy to eat a lot of them in one sitting as a result, which is either a good or bad thing depending on who you ask. To me that's a perk.
Perhaps one day Taffel will bring Raffel scream back to us. Until then, it will live on in our dreams.
