Louvre Abu Dhabi has commissioned Giuseppe Penone to create a site-specific artwork that is now on view at the newly opened museum. Penone's four-part installation Germination, reveals the artist’s fascination with the use of organic materials, such as trees, to highlight the connection between man, nature and art. The central element of the installation is Penone’s Leaves of Light, a vast bronze tree which interacts with Jean Nouvel’s architectural design through mirrors placed on its branches reflecting the ‘Rain of Light.’ Soaring towards the dome covering the museum’s outdoor walkways, the tree becomes a symbol of life, as shared by all cultures. Louvre Abu Dhabi opens to the public on November 11
"Jean Nouvel's intention behind the roof is his so called "rain of light" ..as a physicist and mechanical engineer, we have to make sure that the house creates the desired effect..." said Matthias Schuler Transsolar in 2009 talking about the Rain of Light mock-up in Abu Dhabi.
Inspired by sunlight filtering through palm tree leaves in a Middle Eastern oasis, Jean Nouvel wanted to create a 'Rain of Light' for the Louvre Abu Dhabi. This effect was to be applied in the outdoor plaza under a large perforated dome.
To ensure visibility of the 'Rain of Light', a detailed understanding of the physical principles that cause crepuscular rays was necessary. Contrast and visibility, dust and twilight, divergence of sunlight, minimum size of openings in the dome, and reflections of light under and at the edge of the dome had to be considered. Some aspects of this light effect, such as geometry and material reflectivity, could be checked with a scaled model. Dust and humidity, which are essential for good visibility of the rain of light and are characteristic of Abu Dhabi’s location, could not be scaled. A special calibration based on a partial 1:1 model was necessary to define the amount of artificial fog which represented dust and humidity in the scaled model.
From all these studies, we provided recommendations on location, size and ratio of dome perforations and on reflectivity of dome surfaces proved on-site tests in Abu Dhabi with a mock-up scale 1:1.

Rain of Light (Takahashi Banmei, 2001)
Between Banquet of the Beasts and United Red Army was produced this movie about those nutty kids who holed up in snowy mountains in the name of revolutionary training but ended up mostly killing each other. A movie about a making of documentary on a movie about the incident. The intention is examining distance: from young people of now to these young people of then, from working actors to ardent, steadfast radical entities, from directors to cult leaders, from film shoot to insurgent training camp. The effect is that it makes the whole thing and all involved feel goofy (they probably were), caught in a movie with all components of relief and detachmemt, but does maintain that maddening/heartbreaking/inspiring air those other, far better movies give. Just a product of a far more mainstream perspective, pondering rather than feeling

The Rain of Light Ignites the Energy of April!
I do believe we are finally coming out of the fog of this first quarter. Today is the first day I actually feel reconnected to my mental matter with clarity!! Bout damn time too!!
Ya know what I find funny with myself, with all this shifting and changing, the language of light has been changing, the understandings of what I am seeing, very different than ever before, and I usually complain out…
