It’s Genocide Prevention Day
Today is International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime (abbreviated as Genocide Prevention Day)! It marks the 73rd anniversary of the Genocide Convention in 1948 - the first human treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and signifies an international commitment to “never again,” post WWII, and provided the first international legal definition of “genocide.”
Today is a day to remember the victims of genocide, as well as learn about the past to properly take action in preventing future atrocities. It’s *always* important, but especially now as alt-right and white supremacy groups continue to rise around the world.
The Early Warning Project tracks mass killings occurring today, and researches data to help predict future genocide - they also have a map to help visualize their data and risk assessments. I’ll have links below if anyone is interested in further reading.
CURRENT mass killing tracked by the Early Warning Project include:
Burma/Myanmar [State-led on non-combatant civilians; state-led on non-combatant ethnic minority civilians]
Philippines [State-led on non-combatant civilians]
