Applications now open for $20,000 Rainbow Research Fellowship
Applications are now open for the State Library of Queensland’s $20,000 Rainbow Research Fellowship.
Are you keen to research, explore and create new knowledge about Queensland’s LGBTIQA+ histories and communities?
Applications are now open for State Library of Queensland’s $20,000 Rainbow Research Fellowship, part of the 2026 Queensland Memory Awards (QMAs).
The Rainbow Research Fellowship recipient will receive a stipend of $20,000, a 12-month personal workspace within the Neil Roberts Research Lounge and premium access to State Library’s extensive collections and expert staff.
Queering the Lens
The 2025 Rainbow Research Fellowship was awarded to Dr Marion Stell and Professor Celmara Pocock for their project, Queering the Lens: Cross-Dressing in Family Photograph Albums.
Buried deep within family photograph albums of the twentieth century lie hidden stories capturing people joyfully engaging in the practice of cross-dressing.
In the 20th Century, cross-dressing was regarded as both deviant and immoral (when conflated with queer sexuality and gender) and as a widespread and socially-embraced form of entertainment (when viewed as a humorous or celebratory diversion).
Given the widespread nature of the practice – and its association with events or parties – photographs that capture instances of cross-dressing are plentiful.
But the humour that enabled people to cross-dress without persecution also masks the more deliberate intent of gender inversion at play.
Consequently, many of these photographs are catalogued according to the type of event or gathering, rather than identifying cross-dressing or gender.

One of seven QMA Fellowships on offer
In this way, many photographs in State Library’s collections remained largely unseen, uncaptioned, and uncatalogued as queer history.
Marion and Celmara’s project is recovering the rich history of these images as part of the queer story of Queensland and Australia.
“Serendipitous searches of the State Library of Queensland catalogue – and a bit of an inkling from our queer sensibilities – allowed us to quickly find some starting images for the project,” says Marion.
“We’ve been busy lifting the lids on archive boxes and tenderly opening fragile covers of family albums.”
“It’s been fascinating to read these photographs anew and to queer the lens, finding the mischief of crossdressing in twentieth-century Queensland.”
The Rainbow Research Fellowship is one of seven QMA Fellowships on offer in 2026.
Applications are free.
But must close on 1 August 2025.
