Here it is! it involves 4 dice rolls on a series of lists. You can change things as you see fit, mix and match if things don’t fit right for you, so on and so forth. I tried to make it feel like these backgrounds had depth that could easily be expanded upon.
I’m hyperfixating and have been using this thing pretty extensively, so what better thing than to inflict my hyperfixations on others? Let’s board the crazy Chaos lad train!
First things first, lets have a look at character creation. There’s several choices to be made here, but the first one is a biggee. Do you want to play as a human or Chaos Space Marine?
The human I have the most experience with, so we’ll start there. Playing as a human gives you several benefits - you get a lot more starting non-combat skills, and a handy little initiative boost.
Mechanics-wise, you gain four starting Skills - these are Linguistics (Low Gothic), any two Common Lores, and any Trade skill. Linguistics allows you to read, write, and make checks that involve a specific language, in this case the common tongue of the Imperial lower classes, which is also used by most of Chaos’s mortal following due to its roots in said class. Common Lore lets you make tests to know things that can be considered public knowledge - if it requires extensive study to know, then its Scholastic Lore, and if knowing it puts you on a watch-list then its Forbidden Lore. Finally, Trade allows you to do miscellaneous tasks associated with a trade, such as cooking, scrimshawing, or building spaceships.
Whenever the rules say you “Gain a Skill”, it means you learn the first rank of it, which allows you to make that roll without a penalty - if you didn’t have that, then you’d be making them at a -20 penalty to your core statistic, which is a pretty big penalty.
Because all my current characters have pretty extensive setting modifications, I’ll showcase this with a character that I make alongside you. Here’s the Linguistics and Lores, using some I grabbed from the Skills section:
Now, to add a Trade. For whatever reason, the Trade skill isn’t included by default, so we’ll add it ourselves. Click this button:
You’ll now see a new skill pop up. Name it Trade and type in whatever you want, though bear in mind that some trades have more mechanical use than others - the only one that comes to mind is Trade (Armourer), which is used for both crafting weapons and armour, and repairing vehicles. If you intend to be a crafter, including of Daemon Weapons and Vehicles, then you probably want that one!
You’ll also notice that it uses the wrong stat by default. Not to worry, we can fix that!
Trade is Int based, so you’ll want to select that, and then click the first checkbox to show you have Rank One in the skill.
Humans also get another useful ability: a unique Trait called The Quick And The Dead. It’s not the biggest of boons, but it gives you +2 Initiative, which can be useful - after all, the faster you drop the enemy, the less you’ll be shot, and humans are squishy compared to Space Marines. You’ll probably want to keep that in mind, as the books are designed for a mixed group of Chaos Marines and Heretics. There are two things to do to show this Trait.
First, we want the actual mechanics to work.
See that little dice roll? Update it. (Ignore that I forgot to check Remembrancer, its fixed now)
You’ll also want to note down that you have this trait so you don’t forget it when you check back over the sheet someday, so we’ll add it in Traits, the same way we added our Trade.
Here we go~
Now, if we want to, we can also add a little reminder of what that means. We can do that beneath the Armour and Health section, which is currently occupied by the reminder of what the Space Marine Implants do. Much like all the other Add sections, we could add it as a new description, but as this guide is for a Human player, I don’t think we particularly care what the mechanics of a Space Marine are - so lets just replace them, going from this:
To this:
With this done, we have now applied the Human traits! I’ll make a new reblog for the next stage, but this is already pretty long and I don’t want to leave @natalieironside hanging all evening while I type everything up in one go.
9 - Immortalizing an Old Friend as a Monstrous Hunter in Monster of the Week (Feat. Colin Parker)
We are joined this episode by one Colin Parker of the Scavengers Network, Keeper and Producer of Myth Takes, a (currently) Monster of the Week show! He's here to tell us how to speedrun cat character creation and share some stories about some cats that he's known! We even base this episode's character off one of them!
Oh this episode is about Monster of the Week written by Michael Sands and published by Evil Hat.

I made a ‘chargen’ pack of things, mainly complexions (ft work by ascendia!), but also some unnatural eye tints, and porting an eye retexture from DAI (by koric !)
Trying to distract myself from sads with chargen for a 5e one shot @redhawkfg is going to run (and will coincide with my visit Memorial Day weekend \o/).
She’s a Drow rogue (tentatively named Zartana), because when in doubt about what type of character I should play, the answer is always go with morally ambiguous knife-nut. :)
(Throwing the rest beneath a read more because I need to ramble for a bit to help shake loose some ideas)
So! Erik went old school with stat generation since he rolled up a few sheets for folks, and I did the same: roll up for 4d6! (That means roll four d6, drop the lowest value, and add the remaining three.) The Gods of RNG were kind to me: in order, I rolled 15/17/14/17/15/14. (So many sixes. Pretty sure this means come game day my dice are going to be ice cold.)
I decided to distribute them as such:
STR: 15
DEX: 17
CON: 15
INT: 14
WIS: 14
CHA: 17
Now, as an Elf, I got +2 to DEX; and as a Drow, I also get a +1 to CHA. So, that brings DEX to 19 and CHA to 18. Sexy.
We’re doing this one-shot at level 8, but when I first did chargen, I completely forgot about the dual wield feat that would be pretty fucking sweet for a rogue. So for one of the ability score increases I get, I’m going to take that feat instead. I do have another ability score increase, either +2 to one stat or +1 to two stats. I’m going with the latter, to bring DEX up to 20.
*purrrrrrrr*
Now, I’m not sure where to put that remaining point; I’m leaning toward STR, although CON would be sexy because more HP is always delicious.
Before we get into that, there’s a couple of things going on regarding background and proficiencies.
I picked the Criminal background, which gives me proficiencies with Deception and Stealth. As an elf, I get proficiency in Perception. I also get my pick of four more from a small pool as a rogue: I’m grabbing Sleight of Hand, Intimidation, Acrobatics, and one more I’m still iffy on (either Persuasion or Athletics is my preference).
I decided to roll dice for the background options since I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted this rogue to be like (besides a knife nut). I got:
SPECIALTY: Enforcer (Original thought: ehhhh.)
PERSONALITY: I am always calm, no matter what the situation. I never raise my voice or let my emotions control me. (Original thought: Hm. Well, I won’t fall into the potential trap of making her too much like Velia. Current thought: FUCK I’M TEAM MOM AGAIN WHAT THE HELL.)
IDEALS: Chains are meant to be broken, as are those who would forge them. (Original thought: Hmmmm. This has some serious potential; maybe why she’s living on the surface rather than a Drow city? Will depend on how Erik decides to go with worldbuilding.)
BONDS: I’m trying to pay off an old debt I owe to a generous benefactor. (Original thought: Meh- wait. Wait wait wait, that works really well for Enforcer specialty. AND the ideal. *tapping chin thoughtfully*)
FLAWS: An innocent person is in prison for a crime that I committed. I’m okay with that. (Original thought: A bit dull, and obvious to me, but I like it way better than the other options. Will talk with Erik about maybe going with something completely different from the PHB’s suggestions for this one.)
So, I’m an Enforcer-type. I rolled her height and weight stats, and she’s a five foot flat, hundred pound tiny elf-lady who can apparently put the fear of God into someone or stab them really dead. She is already shaping up to be EVERYTHING I LOVE AND MORE IN A CHARACTER.
So this is why I’m waffling on my stat point distribution and last proficiency choice: STR would fit thematically as an Enforcer, although, again, CON is fucking delicious. Athletics would benefit from the boost up to STR, too, if I pick that up as my last skill proficiency.
Similar to this, one of the rogue features is expertise: I get to choose two of my skill proficiencies (or one skill and my thieves’ tool proficiency) and double my proficiency bonus with them, and then at level six I get to pick two more skills (or one skill and thieves’ tools if I didn’t pick ‘em previously). Definitely picking up thieves’ tool proficiency - too damn useful - and for sure yoinking double skill proficiencies for Stealth and Acrobatics. But what to put my last double skill proficiency in? Intimidation? Athletics? Deception?
ARGH options, too many options, ADD brain is not pleased.
We see a lot of issues along the lines of “Something is suddenly broken in my chargen screen”. In fact, we get a lot of issues along those lines ourselves - this post was inspired by an issue one of us just had where the hair tint in the character generator just completely disappeared, just showing bright white hair for everything! We’ve also gotten issues with broken sliders, etc. So I just wanted to make a super quick troubleshooting guide for chargen-exclusive issues:
It’s probably your chargenfcg.xml
This is the fiddliest file, in part because you have to either manually merge it or use an automatic merging tool whenever you have multiple mods that affect your character generator. It’s very easy to wind up with something that will just break your entire chargen file, with unique and baffling results. So anytime you get something going strange in your chargen that isn’t happening in the rest of the game, follow these quick troubleshooting steps:
Does your file validate? The chargenfcg file is an XML file, with a setup similar to an HTML file. Anyone who’s ever forgotten a closing </i> tag can probably guess how this could go wrong. So always, always start by running it through an XML validator like this one and fixing any errors! Common suspects are failure to close quotes, mismatched quotes, missing closing tags, mismatched tags, and swapping out ‘=‘ for ‘-’. (That last one was the cause behind a unique case we had where someone’s sliders in DAO just completely broke except for like two of them.)
Do you have any corrupted characters? Open up your file in notepad and see if you wind up with any weird question marks or blocks. (This was the cause of the aforementioned missing hair tints.)
Is everything in the right place? Make sure you don’t have any hairs trying to hang out under tattoos, etc. (I haven’t seen this happen to anyone yet but it is definitely not going to result in the thing you want to happen happening.)
If all else fails, back up your chargenfcg to another folder and remove it from override entirely! If that fixes your chargen, start adding in mods one by one until you either find the one that breaks it or have added them all back in and successfully exorcised your game.
If none of these steps work for you, feel free to drop by our inbox! But please do try them first, because they are much, much faster than waiting for us XD
