hi, i was hoping you could help me understand why wearing a war bonnet is offensive? i am not rejecting the idea that it is, but i don't think i entirely get it. like, i understand why, say, shakira dancing in a sexualized Hindu dance was not correct. is that what you're saying about the war bonnets? that they were worn in a shower in one of the videos and done in poor taste? i think i understand, but if you have anything more to add, i'd love to hear it.

The blog this-is-not-native is an excellent resource for cultural appropriation of American Indians. They have a resource page with links explaining the problem with wearing warbonnets, headdresses, and using redface. 

In short, though, wearing a warbonnet is inappropriate because it is often used to portray a stereotype and because the warbonnet has cultural significance. Warbonnets need to be earned, they are not a fashion choice.
