What constitutes "teasing" a dog?
The general definition of “teasing” according to Dictionary.com is: “to make fun of or attempt to provoke (a person or animal) in a playful way.”
I think it applies pretty directly to animals. If you’re trying to purposefully provoke an animal but don’t wish them active harm or anything negative, that’s teasing them. Now, that’s not necessarily bad if and only if it’s part of play and the animal doesn’t find it aversive (e.g. you can tease a dog with a toy to get them a little riled up before throwing it for them - as long as the dog isn’t frustrated by not having access to the toy, doesn’t get overly aroused by the situation, and acts in a way that indicates it’s genuinely part of a positive play experience). It’s also worth keeping in mind that a lot of the ways we make fun of animals does turn into teasing, because we’re doing things we find funny to get a reaction out of them.
