18. One of them is sick

“Tsukoooooo,” Kaori whined from where she lay under far too many blankets. She was sweating and shivering all at once, being sick was the worst! And unlike when she was younger, she actually had somebody who would care for and dote on her while she was ill. Of course she was going to milk this for all it was worth. Even Toko wouldn’t do this for her, she was far from the nurturing type.

“Y-yes, Kaori?” Tatsuko asked, immediately arriving at her girlfriend’s sickbed.

“Has my medicine run out yet? Can I have more yet?” Kaori asked, turning to the side to make eye contact.

Tatsuko took a moment to think that through, then shrugged her shoulders. “You have about ten minutes left, technically, but I think it should be safe for you to have some more… Do you want it with water, or tea, or something else?”

Wow, she was even giving her options. This was the life. “Tea would be great, Tsuko.”

At first, Kaori had only agreed to go out with Tatsuko because she thought that it would make her more useful, but as time went on, she started to have some honest affection for the girl after all. It was the same sort of thing that happened with Toko, she guessed. Toko outright said that she wanted to use Kaori, and let Kaori use her, but it became real friendship based in bickering and mutual cruelty. Now, Kaori was experiencing friendship based in tenderness. It was strange, but… Pleasant.

Tatsuko was desperate, to want Kaori and show her this much kindness, but even the desperate deserved something, right?

Tatsuko returned with a cup of hibiscus tea, and another dose of medicine. Kaori had picked this as her favorite on their second official date, when they’d gone to a sampler at a tea shop after Tatsuko learned Kaori had no favorite yet. There were a lot of things Tatsuko learned about Kaori. The first time she’d been in this house, most of all. Kaori had gone to the restroom, and her elder sister had turned up. She had nothing but insults for the small and mousey girl in her living room, until Kaori returned and fixed her with a glare full of such hatred Tatsuko could hardly believe it.

It was that day, seeing the depths of Kaori’s anger, that Tatsuko realized something about herself too. No matter what… No matter how frightening a look like that was, she felt as if she’d never have any desire to be anywhere but at Kaori’s side. So when the new dose of medicine kicked in and Kaori drifted to sleep, Tatsuko sat beside her. She knew Kaori wouldn’t dote on her like this, if she caught this flu from her. She didn’t mind. Didn’t mind at all.

Kaori meant so many different things for Tatsuko, even if she didn’t know or understand.
