ooooh, thanks for asking!  I rarely get asked when I reblog one of these memes and this one was so interesting. 

13.  My writing process from idea to polished: (yeah, I know you didn’t ask for this one, but my eyes read this one as 16 and I answered before I realized it, so here it is!)

I generally start with a scene in my head and work from there.  For my longest-running series, the Phil/Clint MCU one-shot universe that I’ve been writing on for 10 years (yep, 10!), it’s always one scene. It started with Phil being a paper pusher and has included Clint as a corgi, Bucky’s dramatic entrance, Clint ripping his gas mask off to save Phil, Clint with a jetpack, and so forth.  

Occasionally I have a concept that jumps to my head (small mutant talents like toasting bread lead to the whole Callahan’s Crosstown Diner series) or in my sexuality series (to try and examine different genders and sexualities through MCU characters).  Some, like The Great Black Distance that I’m toiling along writing now, have been with me for a long time, bouncing in my head. 

Then I start writing.  I’m a front-to-back writer; I start at what I think will be the beginning and work my way scene-by-scene through the story.  For long AUs, I usually have five or six scenes that I use as plot markers;  in the Medieval Cake ‘Venger’s Verse, I even have an idea of scenes for the next story as sort of guidelines for where to get the characters.  As I write, I find that the smaller, in between scenes begin to spin themselves out as I go along. I’ll realize I need to have a conversation to get character A to the next point, for example.  Sometimes I get stuck -- you’ll hear me complain a lot about that here on Tumblr -- because I have to write the connective scenes.  

I tend to sprinkle lots of forecasting winks and nods in as I go and not all of those are conscious. I joke about my muse and the characters writing themselves, but it’s really true. At points, I look back and realize the plot turned and I’ve already set up the ending without even realizing it.  Probably comes from thinking so much outside of actual writing; I run lines and actions and potential scenes in my head all the time, driving my car, in the shower, before I fall asleep. 

Editing is a big part of the process.  I read through it multiple times and still miss so many freakin’ errors it’s not funny.  Mostly, I let little stuff ride because I’d never publish if I waited until it was error-free; instead, I focus on the story, a smooth flow of words, and characterization. 

16.  How many drafts?

That’s hard to answer. I tend to edit and draft in stages as I go, so it sort of looks like I do one draft, but that’s because I’ll go back and edit earlier parts as I finish later ones.  Definitely at least 3 -- the original, the beta, then my edit. :)

38. Weirdest story idea I’ve ever had?

Wow, I have so many really strange/weird ideas.  Some I’ve even written: “Storm over Xela” is a space opera, “Dust on a Butterfly’s Wings” is Fem!Clint in Steampunk Victorian England, and “Never Say Never” is both a/b/o and male impreg which I swore I’d never write.  Right now, I’ve got a time travel concept where Clint goes back to Edward III’s England, meets a young version of Phil who traveled back in his 20s, and the two end up fighting in the beginnings of the War of the Roses. Another time travel one I’m actively plotting is Chef!Clint going back to Civil War New York, meeting War veteran Bucky, skinny Steve, Peggy, Sam, and Natasha (very historical based both of them).  One day I’m going to write the next one in my Clint/Dean Winchester series where the reality stone fucks up everything and Clint is the Hunter and Dean’s Captain America ... 

43. What do I do if/when the character’s don’t follow the outline?

If? Ha! Always!  I pretty much go with it since my writing process allows for shifting and changing.  If my subconscious wants me to go another direction, there’s probably a good reason for it.  Some of my best fics came from letting Clint be Clint, damn it. :)

Working Things Out by Ralkana

An Gym AU where Clint’s a personal trainer and Phil’s the client. I adore the descriptions Ral writes; she’s the queen of pining and longing glances. The characters are spot on, the fic perfectly paced, and the get-together the best kind of payoff. I love her stuff; she should be writing romance novels!
