Couldn’t sleep, Deep Rising wasn’t on, ended up watching an anime titled Overlord in its entirety.

It’s fine, but thanks to the standard set by Log Horizon for this particular subgenre, pretty unfulfilling. Especially since they spent their entire first season without much direction, one ends up with a rather unremarkable overall impression.

I like the contrast and the self-aware hypocrisy of the main character, though. There are some decent personalities at work here, albeit many of them still need a true defining moment-- probably to come later. Whatever the case, I am definitely calling this one “Okay if you’re into that kind of thing.” I’ve seen better, but also much worse attempts at the same thing.

“It gets great 25-30 hours in!”

Pardon me, but I decide if a game I’m playing is going to be worth more of my time in six hours at most. Outside of an MMO experience, I’m pretty sure we’d classify anything that takes around a week just to start enjoying it “badly designed.”

Outside of cryptic and punishing RPGs that only run through DOS or similar, which were pretty much an acquired taste by design, can you really justify spending around a week before you even like a game?

Gremlins 2 came out in 1990. We still weren’t over our fascination with turning any movie into a franchise across platforms by then. We had a huge boost variety, comedy and action inherent in the premise of that movie alone.

So... how come we never had a Gremlins cartoon? I know there are all kinds of financial reasons behind it, but you have to admit that it would be a great fit in that era.

Comic read: Fathom

Honestly, I like it. A sort of attempt at a more grounded, yet alien version of the Aquaman story, with the greatest strength being internal consistency. Basically, concede just a couple of the usual impossibilities you would expect of a superhero universe, and at no point does it betray your trust; everything remains plausible within the rules that it establishes.

Problem is, they blew their world-saving plot way too early. No wonder its original run was only fourteen issues, because the most viable threat of them all was taken out in the first nine. But I would always prefer that a story is cut short rather than outstay its welcome, and we have two other collections if we get curious enough; I just wanted to see what I missed out on back in 1998.

As of yet, I have not seen much evidence many people have heard of this game. It’s only been out for almost a week in this neck of the woods, sure, but I really think it deserves some consideration. Gorgeous art direction, fun characters and lovely music will go a long way on this one, even if you could argue that mechanically, it’s not very impressive. Just give this a look, then maybe the game itself, if you’ve liked games such as Princess Crown and Odin Sphere.

Concept: Visual novel/dating sim where the whole game starts on a first date. You are not pursuing any number of love interests, you’re just seeing where this relationship is going. One has stats and various minute tasks to attend to for certain short-term goals, but how long and how far things end up is up to your ability to meet their and your character’s needs. Possibly certain random elements at work at the start of a new game so that your virtual partner’s personality isn’t static.

Just thinking of a possible spin on different genres and media.
