Red Hood joins twitter. Chaos arises
pt2
It becomes clear a lot of people view trans men as ‘masculine women’ instead of feminized men the moment you start reading how they talk about trans men. Trans men are men with womenhood and femininity forced on them. To ignore that simple fact and act like we are women and are treated the exactly the same as masculine cis women is trans erasure.
I’ve seen so much fat Tenna art that I forgot he’s not actually fat in canon. Like I’ll look at the damn sprites and think “why the fuck is he so skinny”
Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm realizing that Yuugi, Kaiba and Jounouchi feel challenging to write in specifically similar ways because they are tension-based characters. Yuugi's sweet and gentle nature vs. his anxious obsessiveness and buried anger, Jounouchi's 'golden retriever energy' & intense steadfast loyalty vs. his predilection for impulsivity, temper and sometimes violence, Kaiba's...well, innate Kaiba-ness, vs. "my life goal is building theme parks for kids" vs. the spectre of Gozaburo biting at his heels at all times vs. Mokuba vs. whatever remains of an ancient priest in his soul that's also attached to the soul of a huge powerful dragon, etc. etc.
It's not that straightforward characters like Anzu aren't challenging in different ways. Anzu knows roughly who she is, what she wants, and what she believes, with some very normal teenage wibbly-wobbliness. The challenge in writing her comes from sorting through the mire of early-aughts baked-in shounen misogyny and excavating the (very good!!) character buried in there, and figuring out how to extrapolate the kind of development for her that the other characters received.
Yuugi, Jounouchi, and Kaiba did receive a lot of that development and so less extrapolation has to be done, but also none of them ever really "resolve" in the sense that the fundamental tension of them goes away. It persists through character development, because it's a different thing. It's not a lesson to learn, or even necessarily a problem to fix. The tension is the character. Developing any of them doesn't look like unifying them into a perfect, cohesive whole; but instead exploring any one of hundreds of different pathways for what holding and managing that tension looks like across a single story, a long arc, a lifetime, so on and so forth.
Teeny tiny pet peeve of mine when reading fics involving Azul and all anyone ever has him do is work over contracts in his office. Like on one hand, I get it, after dusting literally years of work at the end of his book, Azul does declare that he intends to rebuild his blackmail empire. However Azul Ashengrotto has so much more going on in his life than contracts, he's the Housewarden of a dorm! He owns his own business! He runs a side hustle tutoring students!
Like I get it, contracts are his thing, and if you're gonna live your College Student but also Big Businessman Fantasy you need him doing some form of paperwork to look the part but it just feels weird when its like the only thing writers seem to fall back on for him. So many fics have Azul spend all his time in his office writing up or plotting his next contract when Riddle himself awknowledges in the game that the only reason Azul's grades aren't better is because Azul swamps his plate with juggling Housewarden duties, tutoring students (and the entire point of Book 3 is that Azul is actually, really really good at tutoring, too), running a business as well as having to do his own homework and studies on top of that. I don't know, like this is a nothing complaint, it's petty of me to roll my eyes whenever I read a fic and we always see Azul writing up yet another contract, but like, I just wish people would shake it up a little with literally anything else he dumps his time into too, you know?
