You know what?
I'm going to drop a wildly unpopular opinion and peace out: I hate this whole trend of shaming "book purists", and treating us like we all hate art.
No, I love art. In fact, I want more art in movies.
I want movies that are original, tell us something new, challenge the audience.
What I don't want is yet another retelling of a story that made waves when it originally came out, sanitised and neatly packaged for the modern viewer who does not want to be challenged at all, and whose attention-span is heavily influenced by quick-payoff media such as TikTok and the like.
Imagine the gall it takes to look at the works of clever, revolutionary women and saying: "actually, I could do it better", and then warping their message entirely.
These are movies with a wonderful visual impact (nevermind that the whole Wuthering Heights trailer looked like they hired Joey Tribbiani post-booking Days of Our Lives as a set decorator), and absolutely no substance or innovation.
What would be revolutionary, at this point, would be an accurate-to-source adaptation.
And I'm tired of scripts telling the audience what they should feel ("Victor, you are the monster!" - NO SHIT?), and assuming we're all too superficial to have the tough discussions, with others and ourselves.
This whole "you guys just hate fun" attitude is anti-intellectualist propaganda, and I won't be falling for it.
