Philza, in a desperate attempt to give Techno, if temporary, immortality, [insert cool ritual thing to extract the power of a totem] but he rushes it and botches it. When he finally finds Techno, who at this point is assumingly graying and on his last leg, he slams the spell so hard that he accidentally kills Techno. Except, because he rushed the spell thing, Techno's corpse refuses to rot. Now, Philza has a permanent reminder of his best friend. A reminder of the fact that he, himself was the one who took Techno away from him too early.
