Where I live - Jan 2026
Where I live, January sounds like mallards quacking, feathers flapping into flight, and the tinkling of wind chimes on the crisp winter wind.
Where I live, January tastes like soup, soup, and more soup, with lots of garlic and onion (which we call the “whatever you’re cooking smells really good” starter pack). Oh and lots of coffee, lots of hot coffee for those cold mornings, driving to work in the dark.
Where I live, January smells like dried tangerines and the remnants of a holiday season altar that bares a local candle, whose scent is called “Timberline.” My desperate attempt to bring the cozy smells of a log cabin on the mountain ridge into our apartment.
Where I live, January looks like only leaving the apartment when necessary because it’s often cold, wet, and dreary out. Looks like, cozying up with my cat instead.
Where I live, January feels oddly dry and sunny. Feels like winter is providing us with temporary reprieve before reminding us why the February full moon is called the snow moon. Feels like, where I live, if this year looks anything like the last few years, it should be rebranded the ice moon.
This was such a nice exercise for grounding into the five senses and the season. I’ll try to keep up it up monthly, as it was a fun and creative outlet !

Hold up, hold up, hold up ! A 1976 Czech version ?
The Little Mermaid (Czech: Malá mořská víla)
1976 Czechoslovak fantasy film directed by Karel Kachyňa based on the fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen. The film won the Main Prize at 1977 Gijón International Film Festival. The plot follows Andersen's story faithfully, with the primary difference being that mermaids are not portrayed with fish tails instead of legs, but as sea nymphs who appear to have strong disdain for humanity.
The plot depiction is so visually similar to Disney’s 1989 animated version that it’s hard not to question if they did a total rip off. Calls to mind that quote by Oscar Wilde “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” With that being said, I loved the Czech version and enjoyed it even more than the 1976 Russian-Bulgarian version.
