I wanna share with you guys part of my motivation to study urban design i forgot about until 3 minutes ago
(in response to a project with community opposition prompt):
'Toondah Harbour in Cleveland, Queensland is one I immediately think of. It is a private development so I'm not sure that it counts, but the ferry terminal to Minjerrbah needed an upgrade and the Walker Company (I believe) has taken the reins, and plans on making several apartment buildings and a water park in a very out of the way area of the Redland Coast that's poorly serviced by roads and public transport. To do this involves a lot of dredging of a RAMSAR wetland known to host endangered migratory species such as the Eastern Curlew, and the disturbance (damage and rebuilding) of prime koala habitat. Residents are mostly against it or they don't know what it is, and it's been taken to statewide and national debates as to whether this is legal (from an environmental law perspective, it's not). However, it is true that the ferry terminal desperately needs an upgrade, and in my opinion, a public transport link and some strategically placed ecotourism sites. Part of the reason I'm studying urban design is that I want to pitch an alternative proposal with the community behind me that may be implemented by the government.'
