How an F1 Season Works: Races, Points, and How a Champion Is Made
Each year, Formula 1 drops a calendar with around 23 races across the globe. Each race is called a Grand Prix, and it usually takes place on weekends, with some breaks in between.
A typical race weekend looks like this:
Friday: Free practice (drivers test the car and gather data).
Saturday: Qualifying (decides the starting order for the race).
Sunday: Race day
Drivers earn points based on where they finish in the race. Here’s how the top positions score:
1st place: 25 points
2nd place: 18 points
3rd place: 15 points
4th to 10th: 12 to 1 point
Bonus: 1 extra point for the fastest lap (only if you finish in the top 10)
At the end of the season, two champions are crowned:
The World Drivers' Champion: the driver with the most points.
The Constructors’ Champion: the team with the most combined points from both drivers.
What if there’s a tie?
The one with more race wins takes it. If they also tie on wins... prepare for full-on drama.
Extra fact:
Not all races are at the same time—some happen at night (like Singapore) and others in crazy weather (like Spa in the rain).
