Random Word - Confrontation
Heart hammering like an executioners march in Hero's chest, she marched towards the commissioner office.
Knowing that what she had done was an awful idea had not stopped her - Hero hadn't even hesitated to save Villain from her grim fate.
The irrational course of action? Absolutely.
The right course of action? Unclear.
Hero could practically taste the bitter bile at the back of her throat as she fidgeted with one of the many twilight beads adorning the ends of her rib-length braids.
Approaching the frosted glass doors made her legs ache as though she had been walking miles just to get to one of the worst meetings of her life. It was her own fault, of course, but Hero prided herself on being a good person and what did good people do other than the right thing? Even if it was against every rule in the book she would do it and face the consequences with her head held high. Right?
Stepping into the conference room felt like crawling willingly into the den of a pack of hunger wolves; almost every head turned - their eyes carving into Hero's flesh like a knife cutting through butter, making her glance desperately to one of the only individuals not glaring at her with the malice of one thousand suns. Superhero: her mentor. He had promised to advocate for her and defend her from the council's wrath. He always defended her.
"Sit down, Hero," He said with a slight sigh, which is how she knew it was bad. Hero obeyed, sliding into one of the few spare seats at the long, ovular, dark oak table.
When she was still a sidekick, and him still a Hero, he had been her trainer, her support system, her big brother. She had seen damn near every side of his multi-faceted personality and sombreness always meant that he had failed at something.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw Superhero's Rival, clearly trying to suppress a crooked grin when it all clicked. What she did to save Villain was unprecedented, yes, and especially so seeing as Villain was an enemy to the Agency but since it had saved a life she should not be facing such heavy diciplinary action. A suspention, or a demotion, or even just time under supervision would be an acceptable reaction to what she had done. Not an attempt to press charges on the grounds of treason.
Superhero's Rival was doing this to hurt Superhero. She had just happened to get caught in the crossfire.
"Hero," Started one of the higher ranking members, "After much consideration, the majority vote has decided that we will be pressing charges for your actions - in the meantime we will be dishonourably discharging you from the Agency and you will be required to wear an ankle monitor for the time being. Is that clear?"
Hero bit her lip and nodded once, fighting to keep the tears from escaping her eyes.
"Well then," the member continued on, "If you have no further questions, you are free to leave - you will be sent a time and dater to pick up your monitor and ensure it's functioning as required."
When the drabble of words (which had just began to blend into a mush of sounds) had ended, Hero shot out of her seat and left the room, ignoring Superhero's yells to wait, as her vision blurred and she desperately resisted the urge to sprint out of the inconspicuous appearing office block.
Behind her she could hear the raising voice of her former mentor - likely picking a fight with his Rival in her honor - but Hero couldn't find it in herself to care.
Being charged with treason was ridiculous for such an innocent act - she had simply helped someone in need, which was quite literally her job, but (given that the one that she had helped had just so happened to be a Villain) she could be spending the rest of her life in jail, or even face death if a rogue "vigilante" had decided that was too good for her.
Hero had a favour that someone owed her and she intended to cash it in. It was a risky gambit but, at this point, it was the best one she had.
She hadn't even realised how far she had gotten until she was slamming her car door shut and pulling a business card from the cupholder which she had previously discarded.
Dialling the number on the back of the card, Hero listened intently to the steady beat of the dialling which reminded her of a heart monitor in a hospital. Not inappropriate given that she was potentially on her last lifeline.
The dialling stopped and Hero couldn't tell if she was overjoyed, or terrified, or both when a familiar woman's voice echoed into her ear.
"I need help. It's partially your fault that I'm in a shitty situation and I'm not letting you weasel your way out of returning me that favour you owe."
Hero could practically feel Villains smile cracking the screen as she responded.
"Well, Sweetheart," Villain responded in a long, velvety drawl which indicated to Hero that she was enjoying this way more than she should, "What, exactly, can I do for you?"
