Place names.
Sometimes I find myself translating and searching dictionaries for random places of locations i know about. Either that or recall a location's place and shortly translate it in my brain. A few of my favorite names from good ol' Oman:
Majlis-Al-Jinn; The name literally means "The Living Room of Ghosts" [if you consider a Majlis as a living room] It was named so because when wind passes through the place, whistle noises and weird shadows came up. People used to think it was ghosts. (fyi, 'Jinn' is a term for Genie, but also considered to mean ghost/spirit)
Bawshar/Bousher; one of the provinces in Muscat. The closest thing I could find to the actual word is the boy name equivalent, "Bashar", which means "Bearer of good news." in arabic.
Jabal Al Akhdar; The name literally says "The Green Mountain". I guess the people who named it at the time had no ideas?
Jabal Al Shams; one of the mountains in the country. The name is literally "The Sun Mountain" . My guess is the people who climbed it looked up and all they saw was the sun, which, isnt surprising. The sun is a regular companion.
Izki. One of the provinces/cities (?) Its not much of known place, most of my knowledge about it is how it holds some old clay houses that got wrinkly over time. The name, in arabic, doesnt have a direct translation, but is a order to give charity.
Sur. Its one of the areas near Muscat. The name has several meanings depending on vowels used. Either "picture", "arch" or "bridge" iirc.
