it's filler, but the way tenten treats ranmaru in the curry of life arc i believe is the closest we'll get to knowing how she grew up:

ranmaru literally can't walk, and she's telling the group they should "leave this weakling" and saying she hates people like him who can't take care of themselves. so it kind of gives an idea that tenten had been taking care of herself since she was little and that she views other kids incapable of doing so as "weak" even though, yknow, they're children and should have someone raising them.

a little unrelated: i also think this scene shows us how she even had a bond with neji prior to the chunin exams. she shares a similar disdain towards "weaklings" and i assume, because of things neji has told her about hinata, that she hated hinata as well until things started to change. really... their hater attitudes made them friends and that's beautiful ❤️
