Not entirely certain but apparently people are upset with how OUAT is handling the King Arthur tale, saying how it’s butchering it and changing it and I’m all ???
I can’t be certain since I haven’t caught up yet, but...King Arthur being changed? Holy shit water is wet!
Something people forget is that this tale is fucking old. Really old. And the story was pretty basic at first; some great man unifies the clans. That apparently is the great root of the story. And it’s been changing and evolving for centuries.
It used to be tied to Welsh Mythology, but got adapted to fit more Christian values. The Knights of the Round Table weren’t originally there. The magic and crazy stuff attached to it (seriously, King Arthur has stuff that looks like it belongs in a shounen anime/manga it’s that crazy) weren’t there. Morgana wasn’t originally a villain at all, Nimue apparently wasn’t there or anyone else that you can think of like Lancelot even!
Fucking Merlin wasn’t there originally. Merlin! The guy everyone associates automatically with the tale wasn’t originally there. There used to be more than one character fulfilling his job and they weren’t even called Merlin. He’s a Canon Immigrant!
So changing the story? Nothing new. You can have a version you prefer, that’s fine, but getting upset about it changing? It’s been changing and evolving since it was first told.
Hell, no one knows for certain who Sir Thomas Malory was and he wrote Le Morte D’Arthur, the first real collection and chronologically ordered version of the King Arthur tale! There are some Sir Thomas Malory guys in the records, but none of them seem to fit the profile of the guy who wrote it. Which means it could have been a fucking penname.
So really, the changing of the story? Not new. At all. Hell, the Merlin TV series reordered and changed things. Merlin was an old man and yet we got a young one the same age as Arthur in that version!
