Knowledge vs. Talent

I think a lot of people decide to start rapping because they have a good understanding and great amount of knowledge on the rap indusrty as a whole - not neccessarily the art itself. They think that's all you need. Like Weezy, for example. Watch his interviews and you'd swear he’s a lyrical genius, but give him a mic and tell him to go off the top then see what happens. It doesn't compare.

Sign of how Hip Hop has changed:

Back when Hip Hop was forming in the late 70s/early 80s the point of rapping was to showcase the DJ. Peopled rapped about the DJ or about the beat the DJ was playing. The DJ was more important than the rapper. Notice how it was "Eric B. and Rakim" as opposed to "Rakim and Eric B." Funny how the game has changed. Now it's the complete opposite.
