The interesting thing about this Kirby & Co planchette is that somewhere in its long history, someone converted it from an automatic writing planchette in an indicator for a talking board with the addition of a matching “pegleg” in the pencil socket. Check it out! Today’s post features a couple of favorites—a beautifully varnished Kirby & Co automatic writing planchette, and an array of rapping hands. The former is, of course, used to produce automatic writing, and dates from the great planchette craze of 1868. The rapping hands feature in my feed a lot, and are antique specimens from the magic and spookshow trade, being used by magicians for spiritualist demonstrations to tap out messages from beyond, made by Thayers and others. Another rapping hand in action on stage, this time from an early French newspaper.
