Due to the very young age at which he was taken and the extensive trauma from torture and experimentation, Rasaj has severe memory loss concerning the time before his captivity. I haven't actually researched the specifics but I believe this falls under a form of retrograde amnesia. (Plus, now that I think of it, given his brutal treatment it's entirely possible he suffered a head injury while very young that contributed to this)
Amnesia and brain injuries can be pretty complex so I'll stay out of the details. But outside of his first name, how to speak, eat etc, and some brief flashes of recollection, his knowledge of his homeland (and anything that happened before captivity) comes from other people.
This was a long way to say he remembers almost nothing of his life and family from before captivity, and he absolutely hates it.
