It actually kinda pisses me off that every time there’s an adaptation of some classic work coming out, there are takes like “maybe we should not judge the adaptation compared to the original”… I think if the creator doesn’t want their work to be compared and judged on comparison, they can make literally any other type of piece. I’m not arguing for a word for word adaptation - I think those are impossible, first of all, and just not fun to strive for. But slapping a recognisable title, names and plots into your work, and then turning around and asking people not to compare your work to the original is simply absurd lol

I’m thinking about getting into hiking after living as a housebound recluse for 20 years. I seem to remember you used to be a park ranger (apologies if I’m mis-remembering). Do you have any recommendations on resources for learning how to hike safely - basic safety, navigation, common pitfalls, or anything else you think is particularly important to know while hiking? Thanks in advance!

Not a ranger, I just hike a lot and end up having to rescue lost people regularly. 😅 (More common in Florida than New England, which is interesting.)

Don't go off the trail really can't be emphasized enough.

If you need to step off for a moment to relieve yourself:

always stop and take a good look around at your surroundings first

make sure you know what direction you're headed away from the trail (via a glance at the sun or a compass)

don't leave sight of the trail

Not an experienced hiker but CANNOT OVERSTATE THE HUBRIS PART.

My only real (longer than like an hour) hike was on mount Olympus for six hours up and down a gorge with limited water on two bad knees with a heart condition and it was fucking miserable. In my defense we weren't given a length but I should have known better.

Do not end up in that situation!!

So Whumper unties them, and ties their hands in front again. As they do so, they notice the raw skin and scrapes under the rope.

Whumper shakes their head. "There is no point fighting it. The knots hold, trust me, I know. You're just hurting yourself."

Whumper is cold, business-like, practical. Whumpee almost wishes they'd be cruel instead, it would be easier than this matter of fact speaking. Like it's a done deal that Whumpee is never getting free. Like Whumpee fighting for their freedom and life is something they shouldn't do, because it's not practical.

But Whumpee doesn't reply, they just lower their gaze as Whumper ties the rope again, flinching at the pain.

But no matter how much it hurts, they won't stop fighting.

In my experience, they don't even consider that you might not be white outside of maybe hiring a cultural consultant for the characters around you (which they may or may not have listened to, again, in my experience)

idk i think what is interesting about astarion to me is the fact that you have a guy who started out an asshole (normal type) and then spent two hundred years in a very carefully and specifically crafted (by the writers of the game) Become A Terrible Person Or Die nexus. like it wasn’t just a Torment Nexus, he wasn’t just in hell, i feel like this is very important not to forget, he was in hell but it was specifically a hell designed to, over time, kill the empathy of anyone trapped in it, kill their brain’s ability to prioritize other peoples’ survival, to numb one’s conscience.

and then he gets yanked directly out of that nexus and despite that the fact that he spent, again, two hundred years in a situation that was sort of a rock tumbler for the human soul, there’s still a pebble left in there. and it’s a pebble that can be grown if placed in the right environment and provided with a support network.

so i think it becomes interesting because it really does i think force you to start thinking about the limits of free will even on as basic a level as the human personality. i think the fact that he becomes such a different character based on player choice, that his end morality is so hugely dependent on player choice, is uhhh. a big part of what the devs were going for probably.

it makes a lot of people really uncomfortable to acknowledge some bad people would be good people if literally nothing changed except they had a good support network and different circumstances. especially because it means the opposite is also true. which is even more uncomfortable.

you know that part in the beginning of fellowship of the ring where gandalf is talking about how gollum is ultimately only like that because of the ring and gandalf thinks his story is sad? astarion is kinda like if they sexualized gollum.

They're clever animals, they can figure out what senses and information someone has through experience and observation just like we can. It's kind of important for being a) a social animal and b) an ambush predator. A cat that can't figure out what information its clowder mates are working with or what its prey knows is gonna be really bad at being a cat.

Diesel is fully aware of what actions startle me, and the amount of consideration he shows my feelings in the matter is directly dependent on how sure he is that it's totally dinner time now and I'm being unfair by not feeding him yet.

for me it comes down to the way the narrative that “the south is regressive because of gerrymandering and top-down policies imposed by rich white supremacists on residents of color as well as white working class people” omits the fact that the south is also like that because of the centuries of racist terrorism and mass violence enthusiastically committed by white people of all classes. No one ever got tricked into burning a cross or gerrymandered into throwing a bomb or pouring acid into a swimming pool. Even if they were racist out of ignorance, they still chose it that’s still on them. Like how the majority of white voters in the south have historically and currently vote to make their own lives worse as long as it perpetuates white supremacy.

Doesn’t mean you should dismiss the south as incapable of change but the history (feels weird to call it that when it’s sometimes literally what your grandparents were up to) has to be accounted for.
