#rat update

christo passed away on tuesday. he was put to sleep at the vet. i don't know his exact age, but i suspect he was over two and a half, possibly nearing three years old. very old for a rat, especially a rescue rat with chronic health issues and a past full off neglect. i'm happy i've had so much time with him even though he was already over a year old when i adopted him.

christo was a very kind and gentle rat. he got along with other rats very easily, preferring cuddles to fighting over his spot in the hierarchy. to humans he was a cuddly little guy as well. he loved sitting on shoulders and has made an impression on many of my friends ( @knuffeltrein in particular <3)

i hope he's happy reuniting with his buddies valentine, jimmy, tobias, and scruffy. he will be missed by many and my life is better having known him.

I hate making this post.

Whitley passed away today.

He was fine this morning and was gone when I came back from work. No sniffles, no sneezes. Nothing.

Thank you to everyone who cared about him. The others are fine.

The only thing to hate about rats is how short their lives are.

They'll even have miniature hammocks and levels in there too soon, but we do plan to move them to proper tall cages with all necessary items and accessories when we get the funds. That's not too long off but we do have some other needs first... Our house is currently infested oof

I know I post about abuse but the situation is actually quite complex and everything came to a head the other day. I completely snapped, and an understanding was reached.

So... Yeah.

I love my parents.

today was cage cleaning day

scruffy unfortunately passed away last week. it's taken me a bit to make this post because i needed some time to process everything as it was quite unexpected.

i took him to the vet to clean up what both me and the vet thought would be an abscess. unfortunately it turned out to be a tumor, and judging by the way it appeared almost overnight, an aggressive cancer. the surgery to remove it would be risky due to the location close to an artery and even if scruffy made it through the operation, chances are a new tumor would've shown up within a week. i had to make the difficult choice to get him put to sleep. from an x-ray the vet made we learned he also suffered from heart problems and was likely quite an old rat. i never knew his age, because i got him from the shelter, but i honestly assumed he was younger based on how active he was. i'll miss him a lot, he was a funny little guy and a great addition to my group. very friendly despite his past. i'll never forget how his personality changed after meeting his rat friends, going from depressed and withdrawn to happy and curious. i wish i could've had more time with him.

the boys are finally in the full sized cage!! i missed doing set ups like this. no hides and tubes yet because they're still getting used to living as a group, but i'll add them if they do well

how the fuck did tijn go from feeling incredibly threatened by bizzy and attacking him to being obsessed with him in a single night??? he's been sleeping either on top of or under bizzy the whole day. he seems to choose him specifically to sleep next to. what happened while i was asleep
