I wanted to start this post with "With a new infrastructure aside", but I can't as Toyota will find it hard to meet Tesla's success in the short time that they have to meet it. At this point, they aren't coming out with a new emerging technology, they are trying to show that they have improved upon what their adversary has done. Meanwhile Tesla is making great strides in releasing a new larger model and an less expensive one. Now if Toyota can go back and invent a way for the RAV4 EV to use hydrogen and power off of the grid for when hydrogen isn't available, they just may have winner. Imagine an EV SUV that can rapid charge with electricity to 120 (lower than Tesla's current capacity), but drive to the distance of 312 on hydrogen. It would give drivers a backup to power their vehicles without having range anxiety, but offer an incentive to use hydrogen for a better experience and longer times between fillings. The RAV4 EV is a great car, but it does have Tesla insides 🤔. Not only has Tesla provided a vehicle that uses the current infrastructure, but they have even set up their own stations providing free charging from California all the way to NY. Toyota needed to come out of the gate at a point match game when they released the Mirai. Considering the relationship history of these two companies, we will just have to sit back and watch things unfold like its a telenovela.
