~ @starrlight07 Anne Raven Wilkinson (February 2, 1935 – December 17, 2018) was an American dancer who is credited with having been the first African-American woman to dance for a major classical ballet company. Wilkinson broke the color barrier in 1955 when she signed a contract to dance full-time with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She was promoted to soloist during her second season with the troupe, and remained with the company for six years. I first learned about Ms. Wilkinson in @315nelsongeorge's 2015 "A Ballerina's Tale" documentary on Copeland. I hope he gets to do a full documentary on Ms. Wilkinson, and I love the children's book about her by #LedaSchubert, illustrated by @tedikuma (swipe ⬅️). ____________________ Regraned from @ballez.company - Raven Wilkinson is credited with being the first African-American woman to dance for a major classical ballet company...As a light-skinned Black woman, she kept her race private when the company stayed in “whites only” hotels in the racist American South, but refused to deny her race if asked/interrogated about it. While dancing with the Ballet Russe, she was subjected to racism from hotel managers and the KKK (amongst others), until she was eventually dismissed by a ballet mistress from the company, who advised her to start a school of African dance if she wanted to continue working in dance. She was rejected at her next auditions for major ballet companies. ⠀ ⠀ Wilkinson was forced out of the ballet world by pigeonholing racism. ⠀ ⠀ After a two-year absence ... she joined the Dutch National Ballet and retired, homesick, aged 38. However, by the time she retired, the New York City Opera (@nycopera) wanted her to dance with them. She performed with them from 1974 until 1985 and continued working with them until 2011 (when the company disbanded). ⠀ ⠀ Wilkinson persevered with an art form she loved in spite of and against the racism of both the US and the ballet world. She was promoted to soloist during her second season with the troupe, and remained with the company for six years. After experiencing discrimination and racial violence, including the Ku Klux Klan interrupting a performance in Alabama, she left the company.
