It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of the incomparable Carmen de Lavallade (age 94)—actor, dancer, choreographer, mother, and a true luminary of American dance and theater. We honor and give thanks for her extraordinary life, boundless artistry, and the generations she shaped through her work, her wisdom, and her presence.
A Los Angeles native, Ms. de Lavallade began her remarkable career at 17 with the Lester Horton Dance Theater. She attended high school in Los Angeles alongside Alvin Ailey, marking the beginning of a lifelong friendship rooted in deep admiration and artistic kinship. Mr. Ailey was always enamored with her beauty and loved watching her dance, a reverence that would echo throughout their lives and work. In 1954, she made her Broadway debut in “House of Flowers” alongside Mr. Ailey, inaugurating their two legendary careers.
Ms. de Lavallade went on to inspire works by many of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century, including Alvin Ailey, Geoffrey Holder, Agnes de Mille, and John Butler. Beyond dance, she was a powerful and enduring force in theater and film, appearing in classics such as “Carmen Jones” and “Odds Against Tomorrow.” As a teacher and mentor, she shaped artists at Yale, the American Repertory Theatre, and far beyond, leaving an imprint that cannot be measured.
Together with her beloved husband Geoffrey Holder, she embodied a lifetime of creative partnership, love, and legacy. As a mother, artist, and cultural icon, Carmen de Lavallade showed us what it means to live fully and truthfully in one’s art.
We send our deepest love and condolences to Ms. de Lavallade’s son Leo Holder, her family, friends, and all who were moved by her light. Her spirit will live on, forever woven into the fabric of our history.

~ @starrlight07 Anne Raven Wilkinson (February 2, 1935 – December 17, 2018) was an American dancer who is credited with having been the first African-American woman to dance for a major classical ballet company. Wilkinson broke the color barrier in 1955 when she signed a contract to dance full-time with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She was promoted to soloist during her second season with the troupe, and remained with the company for six years. Wilkinson later became a mentor to American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland, presenting Copeland with the 2014 Dance Magazine Award. #ravenwilkinson#blacballerina#blackdancer#brownballerina#browndancer#browngirlsdoballet#mobballet#blacksinballet#trailblazer#legend#becauseofthemwecan#blackhistorymonth#brownskingirls https://www.instagram.com/p/CK1t1p2hyCn/?igshid=o1paw0ksuzs8
