Mari's been on full PMR for a week now!
Yaaaay!! I know you're supposed to introduce things one by one, but first of all she did awesome on chicken and she's a healthy 3,5 year old dog so there were no precautions, and second of all I think it's better for a dog to have diarrhea once for all the new meats than for each one separately :P
She did awesome, no problems at all~! I wouldn't recommend doing this with an older or sick or sensitive dog, but she had ONE day of diarrhea. Actually not even a day, it was some runny poop and then normal poop. Also, it was on a chicken day (it was a little bit bigger than her regular daily portion so I think that's what caused it, not the meat itself)
I established a feeding plan (all our current meat is already packed according to it) and thought I'd share. This month we didn't get tripe so all of those meals are replaced by more heart, but I already have a source so starting next month all will be as in this list:
Tuesday: bone-in (poultry)
Saturday: green tripe + rec bones
Sunday: mix [liver, organ, fish and an expensive meat]
So far my suppliers will allow me alternating between chicken, duck and turkey for tuesday bone-in, and between beef and pork for all other meals. Still gotta find somewhere that sells lamb or something but for now we're good.
Also, Mariko doesn't have a sensitive stomach in terms of content of her meals, but she does have fast metabolism even for a dog and is very sensitive to amounts of food she gets, so we'll be permanently sticking to one meal per day and not less often. Also, she is now getting 200gram meals as opposed to the 220grams she should be getting because giving her more tends to give her diarrhea (that one time it happened on meat and with other foods as well). I was intending to leave her like this for the month and then try making her meals bigger, but I'm thinking I'll maybe just pick rec bones with a lot of meat on them and use that as an extra meal to balance out the amount she eats.
She already had her first rec bone, half a pig jaw (from Miss Piggy I wrote about earlier) and did awesome with it. I did take it away after all the meat and all the soft/thin parts of bone were gone, but she was pretty tired and disinterested by that point anyway. She's really not used to food taking her half an hour! Anyway, it was really meaty and just the meat from it was enough to balance her weekly food intake. It also didn't cause any overfeeding problems because she got it in the afternoon (and she eats in the mornings. The original purpose of it was that she wouldn't poop at night when on kibble. And she'd poop every time she went outside for the whole day and then last time around 10-11pm. SO MUCH POOP >.<)
We'll see how this goes, I think it would be a good idea to have one bonus meal like this, it would be our little attempt at gorge and rest because we can't do the real deal xD Next month I'll adjust the organ portions to "as-if-the-regular-meals-were-bigger" but leave some meat in that extra saturday meal.
