Atiq Rahimi’s Film “Our Lady of the Nile”
[caption: film still from Our Lady of the Nile]
Atiq Rahimi’s latest film Our Lady of the Nile, based on the French-language novel by Scholastique Mukasonga, won the Crystal Bear award for best film at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival in Berlin on February 29, 2020.

The film begins in 1973 in Rwanda. The setting is a Belgian-run Catholic boarding school for elite girls who shed their innocence and are used toward a path of hatred. Twenty-one years later, war and ethnic cleansing consume the country.

“It was important to me. I wanted to understand how hate is created in a nation between people. I also wanted to know how various political movements use the innocents of people and how one ethnicity is made more honorable than another, and how this leads to violence, killing, and genocide.” — Atiq Rahimi
Thank you Olive, for being a powerful ambassador of forgiveness and kindness. It is an honor to work with you and your collective. And thank you to @GISH participants, @RandomActsOrg, & @gilesduley for all of your work in bolstering this brave community of women in Rwanda. https://t.co/terDxadHme
