2 and 3 and 8!

Just did 2 and 3, so here’s 8.

8. Why do you choose to write?

Heh. The not-entirely-tongue-in-check answer would be that ‘choose’ isn’t /quite/ the right word. (This is probably not going to be the answer you were expecting, and gets long and kind of personal.)

Because of the way my executive processing works, and because of how my brain functions in general, it can be incredibly difficult for me to… keep track of things inside of my own head. I can’t build concepts or keep track of trains of thought or keep count, unless I express it. My mind is a pool of murky water - I know that there’s information and opinions and /words/ in there, but I can’t just look at my brain and tell what any of them are, unless I pull them out somehow.

Sometimes talking will do the trick - I talk to myself a lot, sketching out scenes and discussing concepts with an imaginary listener - but spoken word doesn’t have a record besides memory, and especially when I’m talking to someone else I won’t remember it all. (Spoken conversations are difficult for me to hold onto unless I repeat the information in my head afterwards. I’ll remember impressions, how I /felt/ about the conversation, but not the actual /words/.)

So I write things down. Words come more easily that way, and the processing is smoother than spoken word. It comes out more organized. I can see where the thoughts have been and figure out what they mean. Writing is, for me, meditation and self-maintenance and one of the best ways I’ve found for keeping hold of my mind so that I’m not just wandering through the world in a haze. It’s one of my major anchors - this is my brain, I am in control of it more or less, I can organize my thoughts and understand them. If I don’t write for a while, I start to go a little bit bonkers and my brain starts fogging up.

As far as fiction goes… Well, stories are important. Before I got to know a lot of people I learned how humanity worked through stories, though experiencing the world in books and games. And now, when the depression gets too much or I get over stimulated and need to block out the world or for any reason being in my own mind gets overwhelming, I just… go into someone else’s mind. Distract myself with a story for a while - watch a different life until my own is something I can handle again. 

Also, stories are just a part of my mind now. There’s always a couple of them in my brain, like fish circling in the pond. I can’t always see what they are, but I can feel them swishing around in there all the same. (Every now and then I won’t have any stories in my brain, and it’s the weirdest sensation. Like my head is empty. Thankfully it doesn’t last long, usually.) I write them down so that I remember them, and so that I can process them and understand them better. Plus it can be satisfying, to have words do what I want them to  - like solving a puzzle or assembling a machine, the act of creation is an end in of itself.

Sometimes I publish them and share my art, because hell, I wrote them down, may as well do /something/ with them. But that’s really the least important step, sometimes. Sometimes it’s interesting to see how people react to my creations, but really the fun part is over.
