Arc V Speculation: Rayra

Something I’ve noticed, but Rayra has been reacting very often to the negative feelings of those around him. And the 131 preview has him conveying Ray’s words. Its a bit of a stretch, but Rayra...

Is he an empath?

I always assumed Rayra was quiet and standoffish in the beginning because of his upbringing (Edit: Akaba Himika is a horrible mom. I remembered that little detail.), and only opened up to a few people. But if he was an empath, it would explain this a little more. He’s able to feel all the emotions of those around him, and to prevent himself from getting hurt by them, he distances himself from the outside world (Edit: Of course, it could be because of Akaba Himika, but what if he had been withdrawn willingly at the beginning of everything?). This lack of interaction with his fellows leaves him not knowing how to be social, and thus comes off as cold in the early episodes.

Now, why do I say Rayra is able to sense the emotions of those around him? Well... remember he ran away from his fight in the Synchro Dimension? Yeah. Try being an empath in a crowd of spectators who are unknowingly projecting their emotions onto you. It would have overwhelmed Rayra’s senses and caused him to panic.

There’s also the fact that he was able to sense Zarc’s rage when Yuya was rooms away from him. The way Rayra reacted to the rage was terrifying for the kid, and he could tell that they were angry. How? Well, if he’s an empath, it would explain things again. And the 131 preview actually cements it a little, because how the hell is he able to understand Ray’s feelings unless she’s emitting the emotion from her other selves??? WHO ARE CRYING!!! AND THIS IS NOT VISIBLE TO ANY OF THEM!

The lack of supernatural abilities this season was actually a bit of a surprise really. At least until the whole counterpart thing, and Yuzu’s bracelet, but those were not really what I was looking for. Then it was revealed that they were going back to their roots of ‘Duel Monsters are real’ shtick, and duelists who could speak to duel spirits. What if Rayra’s empathy was an offshoot of the ability to speak with duel spirits??? Seeing that golden silhouette of Ray there, I could say that Ray is a spirit, and Rayra can actually hear her. But really. Rayra might be an empath.
