This photo of Raystown Ray was taken in 2006 by a local fisherman while he was looking down on the lake. It is considered the best evidence that there is a creature living in Raystown lake in Pennsylvania. Jeff Krause, a wildlife biologist that works at the lake said “I believe it must be a vegetarian. We have not seen any evidence of this animal taking fish, geese, otters, or ducks. So I would suggest that our swimmers and boaters are very safe. It appears this animal’s habits are similar to Manatees, which are completely herbivorous and gentle. The increase of weed beds around the lake is probably providing more food in the shallows for herbivores and that would increase sightings.”

Since Raystown Lake is man made, the best question is: if there is a monster there, how did it get there in the first place? On the other hand entirely, the photo may be a prank. Some report that it was an elaborate hoax by the local newspaper, though sources on that are limited. Raystown Ray sightings go far beyond this single image, however. The first recorded sighting of a monster in the lake took place in 1962 before Raystown Dam was destroyed to create the lake it is today.

Raystown Ray

In 1962, something large swimming underneath the water in Raystown Dam was reported to police and the local newspaper. However, this dam was destroyed in 1971 for the US Army Corps of Engineers to create what is now known as Raystown Lake with a depth of 185 feet.

A few years later, the annual Raystown Ski Club organizers almost canceled the event on behalf of seeing some large dark creature looming just under the water. Those who attended and saw this display were all convinced it could only be one thing…a Loch Ness Monster. The event continued when the attendees watched the dark figure make its way past the area and further up the lake. 

The general description of Raystown Ray is that it is serpent-like in shape but extends to about 50-60 feet in length. However, no one really knows just how large the creature is  for the sights have only accounted for a large reptilian head poking from the water while the body remains submerged.

It wasn’t long before capitalism made a stand in the legend. Soon, local gift shops carried Raystown Ray merchandise–including patches, postcards, and even shirts. Whether the impression of Raystown Ray influenced the thought processes of those set on seeing the creature, or if their sightings are true, the reports of spotting Raystown Ray have been sparse but have carried over into the present day.

Cryptid of the Day: Raystown Ray

Description: In 2007, a fisherman took this picture over Raystown Lake in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Since then, a website dedicated to the monster has chronicled a hand full of sightings of the serpent, as well as a few other photographs.

Raystown Ray is a cryptid purported to live in Raystown Lake in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Described as a large, plesiosaur-like animal with a long neck and humped back, Ray was first sighted in 1962. Several eyewitness accounts and photographs of the creature have surfaced over the years, with the first photographic evidence appearing in 2006.

In 2010, the Syfy Channel’s Fact or Faked investigated the lake, recreating photographs of Ray using a floating log, as well as using sonar, divers and bait to try to capture the creature. While it has been speculated that the sightings of Ray are actually a misidentified carp, the Fact or Faked team concluded that an unknown animal could indeed be living in the lake.

Pennsylvania’s Raystown Ray has its own catchy little song. Raystown Ray is considered the local Nessie, but the real question is: if there really is a monster in Raystown Lake, how did it get in? The lake is manmade.

The song’s lyrics were written by Bill Dann and it was preformed by Jack Servello. The song was posted to YouTube in October of 2016. 

“Raystown Ray, Raystown Ray,  please show yourself to us today.  We know that some say you're not real,  but we know you're the real deal.”

Desde hace décadas, "Raystown Ray", una enigmática criatura, ha sido avistada en el lago Raystown de Pensilvania, dando origen a numerosas leyendas.
