Recombinant bovine somatotropin and its effects on cows
I just finished reading a meta-analysis review of the effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) on cows’ health. I did not read what I expected.
I don’t care much if something is “natural” only that it is healthy or beneficial so before reading the article I thought that using rBST could have potential benefits like decreasing the number of cows needed for milk production since it increases milk production by about 10-15%. This seems like a good thing.
I was wrong. I found a meta-analysis review because I don’t think reading bullshit, biased articles are particularly good ways to get educated on a subject. That’s how people start believing that things like vaccines and GMOs are bad (which they’re not).
Anyway, the review concluded that the use of rBST increases risk of clinical mastitis, increases risk of cystic ovaries, increases non-pregnancies (so the cow is culled), slightly increases risk of abortion or fetal loss, increases clinical lameness by 50%, and increases overall culling especially of cows who have already had more than one pregnancy. Many cows also have a moderate to severe injection site reaction. The one benefit to cows health was a reduced risk of some metabolic diseases (especially ketosis).
If you’re looking to reduce animal suffering but still choose to consume milk and milk products, choosing milk from cows not treated with rBST is a good thing. Unfortunately, it is not mandatory to label milk products from cows treated with rBST as such. Many diary producers that do not treat their cows with rBST voluntarily label their products as such. I’m not sure about other states, but Washington state does not allow the sale of milk from cows treated with rBST.
Big surprise, however, that Monsanto is actively trying ban this voluntary labeling claiming that the labeling is misleading and false advertising. Monsanto is the company that developed and sells Posilac, the brand name of rBST in use in the U.S. In response to Monsanto, the FDA requires rBST statements to include a disclaimer stating, “No significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST-treated and non-rBST treated cows.”
I’m not under the impression that the use of rBST on cows has any impact on human health. I haven’t looked into that very deeply but, for now, I believe it to be just fine for humans to drink milk from cows treated with rBST. But it’s not okay for the cows.

Americans are slowly waking up to the sad fact that much of the food sold in the US is far inferior to the same foods sold in other nations.
Open your eyes America! All the foods listed on here are common in this country and the FDA doesn’t give enough of a fuck about you to stop it or at the very least warn you.
