My huge rant about the Edward & Adil reveals

Okay, this same thing happened with Adil in The Desert Rose. I was romancing both Adil and Jack, not sure who to choose. I took the kiss scene with Jack, not knowing it would lock me out of the kiss scene with Adil. But then Adil revealed he was the rebel. It wasn’t a huge shock, but I remember feeling disappointed, mostly because it was kinda too expected. But then the revelation that he was just using Yasmin to get to her father… I felt so BETRAYED! Not that he was the rebel; that he was intentionally lying and playing with her heart to get to her dad! Yeah, he fell for her along the way, but it just RUINED it for me. The next episode I was all for Jack. (I ended up liking Jack’s route. I did replay for Adil out of curiosity. It was hard to forgive him. Maybe I still haven’t forgiven him. 😂)
So now we have Shakespeare’s Code. I’ve been romancing nearly everybody because I have no will power. The same thing happened. I ended up with Edmund because his scene was first (that’s another post). The season finale is the big reveal, even though the build up has made it pretty clear who Romeo is. Yeah, it’s Edward. Again, I don’t like it. For a number of reasons:
It’s too obvious and that’s boring.
I don’t like that it’s set up from the very beginning that one LI is the main/canon LI. Yeah, some authors have their favorite LIs, but actually writing it so that a particular LI is central to the plot and already has history with the MC prior to the beginning of the story? It’s supposed to be my choice, but then Romeo keeps getting shoved in my face. This makes me think that this story was written purely for the author’s enjoyment and not for the readers’.
The deception. The pretending to be someone else and then just pulling the rug out from under MC. Ughhh….
The endless exposition dump at the END of the story/season. J.K. Rowling did this with every Harry Potter book and I hated it! The whole book would be good and then the last chapter would be one character (usually Dumbledore) info dumping the who, what, when, why, and how of the whole book! This is just a huge personal pet peeve of mine. I just think good writing is when you don’t have to directly explain everything to the reader at the end just in case they got lost along the way. If you couldn’t fit all that information in the actual story, then you’re not done writing the story. Go back and put it in the story! If you think you need to explain it to your reader, then that either means your writing isn’t very good or you don’t trust your reader! 🤬🤬🤬 (yeah, HUGE pet peeve!)
The over complication. This book is already so convoluted. There are so many LIs, stats, and all these twists, the rewriting the story by a character in the story, and suddenly breaking the 4th wall. Oh my god… now there’s all this dribble about Edward and Claudius, the mask, you were a tool to make me fall in love with you, I knew it and I fell in love with you anyway, then all this weird complicated stuff, you lost your memory, I had to pretend… OMFG!! 😵 WHYYYY!? I’m going crazy over here. 😂
So yeah, I’m gonna stick with Edmund. I need something that I can actually follow. He’s been pretty straight forward, and surprisingly the most honest character in the book. Ughh… I’m tired now.
