This is a page from my sketchbook which I've scanned in in high DPI. It surprises me how good something can look when you take the time to get a full picture of it!
Drew this to experiment with color to show light and dark. The blue is the shadow, and recedes, while the orange comes forward. One thing I learnt is that orange and pink are too similar to each other in terms of hue. That's why it seems like there are no midtones here.
