how long ago was it — twenty years ? no , more than that . but it was still the two of them . senior prom , with lonnie ditching her for some girl whose name she can’t recall now . & it was still roland who’d try & cheer her up , make life a little lighter , a little easier . she used to be so desperate for release , then : like everything was just another form of being caged & even dancing with her best friend was just a placebo . now — now she’s been on the verge of losing everything , everything she lived for , & she’s a different person . they both are , for sure : this dumb dance of theirs , now , is as precious as life itself . even if he keeps stepping on her toes , & he’s no better at this than he used to be . “ you’re terrible ” . joyce laughs now , a deep , rich laugh like she hasn’t let out in days : everything is fine . the kids are out together , the monsters are gone . music fills the house , not the faint buzzing of burning lightbulbs . she does her best to carry the dance herself , but she barely even cares about it . she just wants to keep laughing . “ you’re killing my feet . you’ve gotten so much worse at this , i swear — ” but the music goes on , & she ends up resting her head against his shoulder like she did , again , those twenty - something years ago . to remind herself that she could crumble if she needed , & there’d still be someone to catch her . “ thank you ” . a whisper . “ for not giving up on me ” .
