Today, I stored a sign featuring various famous LGBTQ people labeled 'Queer Role Models' in the classroom where my GSA meets.
I was then granted the honor of having a lovely chat with a class of sixth-graders about howyes, Tommy, queer is a very mean wordandyou're right, Makayla, you should tell a teacher if someone uses itbut sometimes people re-appropriate words that are used to hurt them does anyone know what reappropriate means, thank you Lao that's exactly rightso they take those words and use them in a nice way, because that makes the words hurt lessbut you're right, Naya, they are still hurtful if the wrong people use them so that's why you can only use them if you're a part of the group they've been used against, now let's get out our sketchbooks and draw patterns.
All in all, one of the more stressful parts of my teaching experience. And when I say 'teaching', I mean 'assistant teaching a single class'. I do not know how actual real-life teachers do it. I'm molding young minds, for the love of G-d! What if I say the wrong thing and they all end up serial killers, or gay, or gay serial killers? I'M NOT READY FOR THIS KIND OF POWER!!
