Read 180 is prescribed curriculum, but:
Janelle MacLean created "Club 180," an after-school session for 10th-graders because even after completely the program, many students wanted to return to her class. Now students who learned under MacLean act as mentors for younger READ 180 students, offering reading advice and book suggestions.
Christa Miller's Read180 class got a taste on Thursday of what it would be like to work in a sweatshop sewing buttons by hand. Miller came up with the idea to go with the latest lesson, "Stolen Childhood," in the Read180 curriculum. After they read several stories about children who work in sweatshops, Miller wanted them to have a hands-on experience.
Yolanda Jaramillo's students want to be "Top Reader." Her class wall is covered in charts, graphs and lists of standings, which students track as closely as their dads follow sports. After reading a book, students take a 10-question test and must correctly answer seven questions to add points to their scores. "Fig Pudding" is worth 28,970 points because that's its number of words.
