Hi guys, I am back! I just spent a glorious week rafting down Desolation Canyon. I finished two books, got a tan, and acquired 20+ mosquito bites. Now its back to school this week!
How is everyone doing? What are you guys reading? Are any of you starting a new semester? Hit me up, I missed Booklr while I was gone!
Read anywhere, especially at your family cabin.
It’s a secret :)
I have a hobby where I like to take photos of my reading in unusual / cool places. Here I am at the Sun Tunnels, Yellowstone and the Salmon River. This started as a joke because I am always reading on family vacations instead of, you know, looking at the scenery and talking to my family. Either way this are a lot of fun to take!
10 Fun Places to Play Reading Games with your Kids
Reading games for kids are not just about drilling your preschooler on letter sounds – they’re actually a legitimate way to have fun with your brood. The extra reading practice is a huge bonus. You can review letter sounds, test your child’s ability to recognize the different letters, and give your kid practice identifying common words. You can go over word families, diphthongs and blends. You can test vocabulary and reading comprehension. Your choices are nearly limitless! Equally exciting is the number of ways and places you can have fun with reading games. Here I list 10 cool places to play reading games with your kids.
Before I dive in, here are the basics –
Reading games to play anytime, anywhere: These are games that you can play without a single letter in sight. You just need to use your brains, and your tongue. Practice letter sounds by having the kids spot an item for every letter of the alphabet, or take turns calling out items from a single category such that the starting letter of one word is the ending letter of the previous word. Another fun game is to have everyone try to spell a word backwards.
Reading games to play with reading material: These are fun games that you can play as long as you have letters or words around you. Practice letter sounds by having your kids search for specific letters around them, or trying to spot all the letters of the alphabet, in order. Practice reading words by having the kids see how many of a specific word they can find around them. You can assign a word family to each child and see how many words they can find in that category. Choose a word from your surroundings and have the kids see how many smaller words they can create using the letters in the parent word.

Now on to the different places you can have fun!
1. At the doctor’s office. When waiting any longer seems unbearable, your child is about to lose it (or is it just you?) and you’re at wits’ end. Actually, you really don’t need to wait so long. If the waiting room has informative posters, use them in your reading games. Older kids may even learn some Health Science in the process. If not, you can always play one of the anytime, anyplace reading games. 2. In the car. You desperately need to keep the kids occupied? Play fun reading games with them! Billboards, signboards, and even license plates provide excellent material for enhancing your reading games. 3. On a neighbourhood walk. Again, signboards and posters are great for reading material. 4. In the kitchen. Challenge your young sous chef with fun reading games around the kitchen. After all, it’s filled with labels of every kind. Have them search for specific items in a list of ingredients, see how many of a specific word they can find, or explain the steps of a recipe to you. Make up fun reading games of your own and have a blast. 5. At the supermarket. With so many signs and labels, you certainly won’t be in want of reading material at the supermarket. Just make sure to keep the kids away from the toy section! 6. At a restaurant. This is another of those places where waiting is unbearable, and reading games can come to your rescue. If the font on the menu is too small for your kids to read, play a generic reading game instead. 7. On the sidewalk. When you have sidewalk chalk, your options are many. Play a fun reading game by writing various letters on the sidewalk and having your child hop onto the correct one based on the clues you call out. 8. At a mall. With advertisements and shop signs galore, you have plenty to keep the kids occupied with. 9. Outside the trial room. When your older child is trying out clothes and the younger ones just want to leave, keep them distracted by playing reading games with the various labels and brand names displayed around the store. 10. At the airport/bus stop/train station. Waiting and kids just don’t go together. Play a fun reading game and make everyone a lot happier.
