there was a subtle glow from the shielded windows to your left, covered by the blinds that were pulled down to protect from watchers outside--not that there were any in the first place.
you don’t exactly remember how long you had been sitting in front of your desk in an empty classroom, or how long it had been since everything that had happened. everything you were struggling with, things that made you happy, things that made you upset--they were all fuzzing together.
your brows furrowed and your lips had turned into a frown.
“is there something wrong, [Y/n]?”
you were startled from the voice that came from the other person across from you, flinching into reality. your eyes met a pair of green eyes, and you relaxed.
as perceptive as always, the Ultimate Imposter, that is.
“E...li.” you stuttered, not used to using that name for the other yet, “when did--when did you get here?”
they blinked, “about three minutes ago. you’ve been staring at your desk for a while, so i couldn’t help but worry when you didn’t greet me when i walked into the classroom or sat down in front of you.”
you looked away. how embarrassing.
“but i don’t mind, really. i’ve been noticing lately that something’s been on your mind, so if you’d like, you can always tell me.” they smiled, a warmth in their eyes as their gaze traced over your facial features, “there’s no one else here but me and you.”
their hands gently traced over yours, thumb rubbing over your palm lovingly, in a caring way. their presence had always been able to calm you down when they were just....them. when they were just.. Eli.
because when the Ultimate Imposter wasn’t there, there was always Eli. and when Eli wasn’t there, there was the Ultimate Imposter. both had firm dedication to their friends--to their classmates who they called their friends--and yet, at the same time, both were entirely different people.
you wished desperately that they could stay Eli all the time--that they could hold you in their arms, to embrace you without having to “hone their Ultimate skills”. if it weren’t for that, then maybe both you, Eli, and the Ultimate Imposter together could coexist happily. you could--all three of you--love each other properly.
“it’s fine if you’re not okay with sharing- everyone has their hardships.”
their own voice was what had snapped you back to reality. the snap was almost instant, and they had you paying full attention to their words.
instead of thinking in your own head like you had been doing these past days.
“i...” your managed to speak, but you weren’t sure if you were entirely okay with sharing. things have been... less than okay. much, much more less than okay. it was obvious from your facial expressions, your actions, your miniature dazes throughout the days.
and somehow, no one else but Eli could really notice that.
“just take your time,” they reassured you, “and if you don’t want to share at all, that’s alright, too.”
they stood up a bit, taking your hand into theirs and squeezing it reassuringly.
“let’s get out of this old, dusty classroom-- why don’t we?”
you cracked a small smile, standing up and following their lead.
their footsteps had echoed throughout the empty school, the sound of yours not falling too far behind. with every thump on the floor, yours would follow soon after, and the scenery of the school windows you looked outside of, you were soon looking in to.
the hues of the sunset, beautiful orange, reds, and yellows had complimented Eli’s palette, and as you both walked towards a small, secluded spot from the world, you hand had squeezed theirs a little tighter.
a small stump lay in the middle of a small and short clearing, trees surrounding the spot, despite you both being so deep into the city.
“how..?”
“i found it while looking for a place to quietly study,” you let out a small breath, taking in the sights of the sky, the clouds, the sun, slowly moving towards another day just behind the painted trees, “i just happen to find it by chance, and thought it’d be a lovely place to share with you.”
their eyes squinted with their cheeks, a smile that you hadn’t yet seen on their face suddenly appearing in hindsight. it was lovely. it was charming. it was so, so, special.
and as you admired their smile, they had walked up to you, holding your hands as their arms gently embraced your body.
“you know, i’ve never been more “Eli” than i’ve ever been unless i’m around you…” they paused, somehow nervous as butterflies filled their stomach. they wanted to hide as your arms wrapped around them as well, “but, i don’t dislike it.”
“i like being this part of me--a me no one sees often--just around you. you give me a sense of self that i could not find by myself, at all. of course, everyone else from the class has helped significantly as well, however, with you i feel much more like… Eli.” their words drifted, they drifted.
“i’m not exactly sure where i’m going with this,” they admitted, swallowing hard, “but just know that this journey of self-discovery, of self-care, of self-love, of self--we will do it together. because with you, i can do anything. i can find myself--be myself. i can be Eli.”
“we will get through this together, this troublesome journey of self-expression.”
they smiled with you as you shared a gentle kiss under the stars.
